Actually you can build an excellent trail rig from a 2wd. Many have done it:
w ww.4wdandsportutility.com/tech/0802_4wd_2007_jeep_jk_2wd_to_4wd_conversion/index.html
Personally if I were to build up a JK again, I would go this route. Buy a inexpensive 2wd and add Prorock 60, atlas TC, etc etc. The end result is a cost-effective, tough, 4x4 for the trail.
If you want a daily driver 4wd, buy the 2010.

It would be more cost and time effective to sell it and buy a 4x '07 JK.
The only sensible two reasons to convert it would be because you are a good wrench with plenty of free time or because it is classic (which I will become some day ) ,

Most people don't realize that this is not a hard job. I've already converted one 2wd jk and I am about to convert mine. Only thing left for me to do is install the tcase. After everything I spent around 1600 on parts. Looking back at it, probably couldve done it cheaper.
Front axle is cake to install. Everything bolts right up. You need about 270$ worth of parts from JEEP.( ihave the list if you need it). The main parts from JEEP that you will need is the intermediate shaft, 4x4 housing, crossmember, shifter assembly and cable. Next find a gently used t-case, and driveshafts. And that is it!!!
You don't have to wire the tcase persay. Your 4x4 light obviously won't illuminate but you can use a tuner to turn your ESP off before wheeling if need be. The installation is not that hard and can be done in about 10 hrs with the proper tools. Pm me if u have anymore questions.
And those who say trade it in. I paid 17,700 for a 2wd unlimited sahara with 3k miles, add the parts, that's 19,300 for a 4wd sahara. How much did you pay?

i say trade it in..... I got a 08 x 4x4 at the end of the 08 model year for 19K..... It has the 17in rims and fogs.... The deals are out there if you look for them.... But if you want to get bigger axels and a atlas I would go the route you are thinking...

I am in the middle of a 2WD to 4WD conversion right now. It might be cheaper to trade up if you planned on having an entirely stock vehicle but who does that? Frame, steering, suspension, etc. is all identical to the 4WD version and everything is there to add the 4x4 parts. Give me a few weeks and I'll let you know how it went.
It costs just as much to add all the killer parts to a 2wd as a 4wd without the higher buy in initially.

I'll call bullshit on the ten hours to convert from 2x to 4x. That being said, I've gotta agree that just turning it into a 4x isn't really worth it. Now if you're going to do a heavily modified JK, that's the route I'd take if I did it again.
