I did something similar with 2 small packs i had.

I have the EVO tailgate table so i cant put them there, i simply pulled the rear headrests and put the top loop of the pack around the posts, and shoved them back in place. I had a cheap tie down strap hooked underneath the seat on both sides and looped up through the bag straps to hold the bottoms from flopping around.

They where up high enough to not really interfere with the storage space, and i didnt mash them into whatever i had in the back when i shut the gate.

I had them there until i mounted my hilift internally, then i had to pull them out as the lift interfered, now i am back to looking for options.

I do the same thing but with my motorcycle tank bags. They have magnets on all four corners and stick to the metal with ferocity. No tapping, drilling, or marring of the paint or sheet metal what-so-ever. Do a Google search for magnetic tank bag and pick what size you need. They usually cost about the same as a quality backpack....(not a cheapy Chinese one)
Some actually do have the straps to make a backpack out of them. So when you get where you are going, just pull it off the tail gate and throw it on your back.

Then light duty backpacks to attach to the rear seat. One on each side, I am going to extend the waste belt to go around each split, so I can still fold the seat down and take them off and use them for hiking etc. Good thing I learned to sew.
Thats a good idea with the backpacks on the seats. Its so much more convenient to just grab something out of the packs than dive under the soft top.

Some other cool Jeep storage.

For the rear wheel wells, should hold my hi-lift offroad kit on one side and air compressor on the other.

I just started searching for Jeep storage, bags, etc online.

I'm going to check REI today, if I do not see anything there that I like I'll probably order those.
