Can somebody tell me what the rectangle slots at the front of box are for ?

My guess is you are talking about the space left to run wires out the console. Inside mine there is a USB connector that I use to charge my phone and those holes allow the console to close over the wire. My best guess without pics.

It's for anything that will fit on them, so the items won't sink to the bottom of a crowded console.
