Here is the perfect fix (you had the right idea in the 5th picture!):

It's hard to see but the extension is bolted to the hitch receiver. I welded a 13/16 nut on the inside of the extension (one side only, preferably passenger side for easier access). Next, screw a 9/16x1.75" bolt (with washer & lock washer) through the stock receiver into the extension to the welded nut. I used this size because it was the biggest I could get through the hole. It'll tighten up to where you'll have no movement in the extension at all. Also I noticed your extension is huge, you can find them as small as 4" (recommended), it'll push the rack out just enough to clear your spare tire.

Note: this extension modification should NEVER be used for towing and ONLY be used for you bike rack.

This will do the trick and for cheap - Amazon.com: StowAway Hitch Tightener: Automotive I have two - one for the extender and one for the bike rack. You may need one or two depending on how well the bike rack fits into the receiver/extender. We have a Soft Ride bike rack and it may be more or less snug than yours.

Thanks! I'll look into that.

Did you mean to say, "Here's a photo of my girlfriend putting the carrier and tire on while I'm sitting back drinking a beer, taking the photo and watching her do all the work"? Well played sir.
