Default best grinder bit for a drill? Or should I find a fab shop with right tools in Socal?

Hello everyone,

I have a need to grind out an additional 1/2 inch to one side of a hole that is drilled in a metal bracket for a roof rack I am mounting(lengthening the hole). The bracket is 3/8 steel. Is there a drill bit that is appropriate for this amount of grinding that will work in my hand held drill? If it turns out to be too big of a pain, is there a fab shop around that could crank this out in a few minutes? any suggestions would be very helpful. I am located in Mission Viejo Ca.

I would suggest a dremel tool, I never had any luck with side cutting drill bits.

Or you can get a round file. Craftsman has them. They actually do a pretty good job in cases like that.

Drill a hole as close as possible to the other one. Then use a round file to remove what's left between the two holes. Slotted hole, done.

I would find someone with a Bridgeport milling machine. It would only take a few minutes, and it would be a clean cut. If I wasnt across the country I would hook you up.
