Do it. I have also thought about trying to figure a way to flat belly it.

True to a point... if you are climbing over bolder, totally agree but, when climbing over ledges, that is where the break over angle really helps.

I also agree the longer wheel base does have its draw backs. But there are plenty of advantages to a longer wheelbase so if I can minimize my break over angle draw backs without penalizing my CG too badly, then I think I have a winner. I don't know anyone who has done it yet... at least I have not run into anyone. So if anyone knows of anybody, it would be great to pick their brain.

is there really 2" hanging under the frame rails in the middle of the jk? i should take a better look under my jeep!

add flat flares and biggers tires. thats another inch if you go up to 37s. and with a 4" lift you should easily be able to go up 38s. thats another 1.5" brings you up to 16" of ground clearance.

The tank hangs below the rail by over 2 inches... I should be able to get back that two inches.

If you use two smaller tanks that would tuck the gas tank up. You still have your tranny skid plate that sticks out, but I don't tend to hit that as often as I hit the Gas tank skid plate. Not sure replacing the gas tank would be cheaper. It would certainly be easier but you would be compromising a bit.

I had to take a peek under my rig to get an idea of just what all hangs below the frame rails. If you put a 1.5-2 inch bodylift in place and got creative with your tank mounts it might save alot of cutting and other fab. The trans and t-case are tucked up pretty well, and a simple flat crossmember might be alot easier to fab than cutting and aligning all the mounts necessary to move all the running gear around. My muffler is inside my frame rail near the evap canister and I could still flat pan it if the tank was moved up. As stated before the longer wheelbase works against the unlimiteds as far as breakover but can be an advantage in other ways. Hard to have the best of both worlds without sacrifice.

i know this is an old thread, but i am debating doing all of this soon and making one solid skid. My jk with 5" lift and 35s at a 100 inch wheel base drags everywhere. my buddys yj with 5" lift and 35s hardly drags he has about 4" more clearance than me. Its a great time to upgrade the crossmember also. Has anyone actually finished one?

I would rather go with a 5 inch lift, 37" tires, and a 2" tummy tuck. That would yield me the same clearance and keep my CG a bit lower.
I am new to jeeps. Can you explain how/where you are measuring your clearance? Are you not including the axles?

ETA: HA! Didn't notice how old this thread was...

Measuring from the frame down is a 4" difference. Also the jks have way more hanging lower than the frame. Our axle clearances are the same seen as we have 35s.

I was just reading thru this and wondering about his measurements.
I run 37's and a 4.5 lift and have 12.5in clearance on front dif and 18in at lowest point underneath.
Edit. I see where he has 35's now.
