Instead, with a kit it can be up and running in a couple weeks or less, with everything working like factory. A/C, ABS, guages work, no engine codes. And it can be done for 10 grand or less if you do it yourself. Still a chunk of money, but it is quite a difference.

No doubt someone could, and will, or somewhere already has, put many other engines in a JK. But they probably spent months figuring it out. Chasing computer codes, hunting for adapters, etc...

Many people do not have the skills, time, or desire to do that. Especially if the JK is their daily driver, they do not want it to be inoperative as a grand experiment for months. They would rather pony up the money and get er done.

Around here in CA, most places want 20-26k for the HEMI swap. My buddies and I can do the swap, but the engine alone is a pretty good chunk of change. But I guess it beats spending less on an engine, but having to get everything custom built to get it operable.

The ones I read about doing it for 10 grand were mostly using a used engine and tranny. The kits alone run 4k to 5k. That only leaves 5k for engine/tranny and odds and ends. Certainly don't want to go through the trouble and than have junk installed.

I would have to DIY before spending 20k+ though. Professional work is nice, but that is a lot of money on my income.

There should be kits coming (unless I missed them already out) for the LS swaps, and those engines might be more common/less money than a hemi?

I saw that RiverRaider has a kit for the diesel 4BT engine. That would be pretty awesome also, but I think that would be great for a rock crawler. My jeep only sees dunes and desert.

If you ask me Chrysler Jeep should be ashamed enough that they put the 3.8 in in the first place and offer us an upgrade, ANY upgrade for a reasonable price.

If it were cheaper I'd honestly go the ecoboost route, its hard to beat its torque to RPM ratio not to mention the HP. But other than that, I'd go a diesel option.
According to jeffs jeep yard 4bt makes 215 HP + 492 Ft. Lbs of torque at 2800 rpms. If I could afford an engine swap my preference would be 4bt or hemi.

Found this on River Raiders site. A little more info on the power band of the 4bt

Q) What type of horsepower and torque numbers should I expect with a base 4bt.
A) The average 4bt makes 120 horse and 385 ft/lbs of torque @ 1900 rpm's. The motors that we build are 250 horse and
492 ft/lbs of torque@ 2700 rpm's (remember the more power the less economy).

Q) Will the stock 4bt be capable in an off-road environment?
A) Extremely capable based on the torque curve being so close to idle. A stock 4bt will make 225 ft/lbs of torque at 1600 rpm's.

The 215 hp and 492 ft lbs of torque are 4bts that have been modified, tuned and are no longer stock. Your basic 4bt will have lower HP but still quite a bit of torque at a lower limit.

Even with a 4bt though, you would still be looking at around $15k plus for a swap if you were going to do it right (new engine, new transmission, odds and ends). Cheaper if you did it yourself still. There is no easy cheap way to swap engines in Jeeps anymore. An old CJ, yeah no problem, a JK, youre going to be spending a pretty penny.

I too will hopefully be able to do an engine swap, and I have my eyes set on a few things. I'll be looking at gas engines for a rock crawler/daily driver and probably a diesel if I decide to go the overland route.

This is a website for all sorts of Cummins specs, itll make you want a 5.9L Cummins in your Jeep

http://www.cumminsdieselspecs.com/4bt.html

If you go to this part of the website you'll see them talking about a possible V6 cummins coming out for smaller chrysler vehicles.

Hah! 610ftq would twist the JKU like a wet towel. But if you built it right, Holy God that would be insane.

I'd settle for the 4bt no problem. Maybe that's what I'll do when I have no more payments on my JK. Supercharger till then?
