Default 39.5" Iroks Bad Idea on Rear D44

I know. I know. I was warned...but they looked so good. It took a 45 minute trip to the local rock spot and a heavy foot to grenade the rear trak-loc, fractured the 4.88gears, twisted splines, and cracked the axle housing. Yes, the housing for the D44 fractured on the underside near the diff cover. Oil was leaking from the fracture.

I found someone looking for the 39's and willing to trade his 37's for them. So I am replacing the rear axle with a used housing, new superior 4.88 gears, a 35 spline ARB with Superior Evolution shafts. I will be spinning the 37" Nitto Mud Grapplers. I hope this combination holds up better.

Dude those pics are pretty scary but the new build you are planning sounds solid.

Those Mud Grapplers are pretty heavy.

How hard were you romping on the pedal? How's the front axle holding up?

Front axle is doing okay... I was on the gas trying to get up an approx. 4' shelf... When gravity fought back the Jeep bounceed back about 2 feet... This initially did not break the rearend. It was not until I tried to go up another at another angle that their was a loud pop sound.

Wow. I would guess the bouncing weekend your rear 44 significantly, probably bending your axle, then on the next try it busted. As soon as you feel thy bounce just stop, lol.

I did the same thing to mine a year ago with 37" toyos so I dont think it was the tires.
Plus I had a heavier setup than you had with Superior 5.13 gears and Superior Chromolly Axle Shafts.

sorry to hear about this unfortunate situation.

Look at it on the bright side, you'll get better throttle response with the 37's

Why not build a 60? Only be a little more then another 44, but it'd be way stronger.
