You are partially correct, the longer wheel base is "tighter" on trails, but not unmanagable. I held onto my '95 XJ for just that same reason. Couldn't get away with the 2 door TJ to save my life. Had to put the youngest (in carrier @ the time) in through the rear and my wife would have NO part of that!
Its funny now though 'cause the 5yr and the 2yr old don't wanna take my wife's truck ANYWHERE... they always want to take daddy's Jeep.
I put a sign on the XJ on Friday and Saturday a guy came with 5G's in cash. Monday I was driving my JK! First on sold by the local stealer!

all the info is really appreciated
thanks for the help all, it makes a difference. I just cant justify spending another 5 - 6 thousand on a four door rubicon. thats if you can find one reasonably priced. My local dealer told me that they are marking theirs up 3-5k higher than sticker to adjust for market demand.
Madness...... thanks again.

beta -
unfortunately - my budget is extremely tight (starting a new business and trying to buy a house, and not to mention retirement and one day a custom fatboy); with that mentioned the better half thinks dropping 6 - 10k in upgrades is a little rediculous. Gotta have the toys......someday......
I had a 06 nissan titan with a 6" lift and 35's and alot of other goodies, but if was too big and the trails were tight, so i figured a jeep.
I am unsure of the x's transfer case; is the tcase in the rubicon all that much better than the x's?
I have found some dealers with unlimited rubi's, but they all start at 32k, and finding a used rescue green is nearly impossible.
the two door appears to be the only means at this time unless I wait another couple of years when they began to get traded in.

the rubis transfer case is a major upgrade and it allows you to crawl in 4low at 0.5 mph where as the x and sahara are good transfer cases, but they are made for general offroad use.
the jk rubi's are upgraded fairly affodably; new front axle, new front locker, new transfer case, etc and labor to install would be more than just buying a rubi to start.
Sad but true......no matter how fairly affordable, it is still a 37K jeep with tax and BEFORE UPGRADES......I have planned 10K in upgrades (lift, tires, gears, drivelines, axles, bumpers, winches, gps, onboard air, etc) so every little penny pinching helps....

I have two kiddos in car seats still, and one of the things that pushed me into choosing the 4 door was the extra space between the back seat and the rear of the Jeep. I am not an engineer, and I may be totally wrong here, but to me if I was to be rear ended, the 4 door would be safer for the kids than the 2 door.

Agreed, but there are tonnes of guys that bang up thier X's on a regular basis over some pretty "extreme" stuff without issue.
But I hear ya... the Rubi is set to go outta the box. Tough choice 4 sure. I was glad my dealer only had 1 unlimited back in Dec. '06.... made my choice easier.
