I have recently stumbled upon an excellent technical article regarding the safe selection and use of recovery gear, including winches. Its quite prescriptive, most sourced from industry manuals but an interesting read:

Because I hate reading such a great source of info on the web only I decided to convert the whole book to pdf. I left everything original so the author will get appropriate credit.

The links in the pdf also work. It is a very good read.

Glad I read this...don't have a winch, yet, but will soon and this helps for a newbie.

Amazing how commonsense some of the stuff is, yet people still ignore it.
