How do I know if other winches will fit? and If I need a winch mounting plate or not?
Do I still need a plate if I buy a warn?

Do I need a warn? I have never been off-roading before so I'm just trying to go prepared. (My boyscout leader would be proud)

I don't have a grip of money nor do I think I'll be pulling a Semi up a cliff but it seems most people only recommend warn. And the bigger the better.

There must be a good starter winch out there. Or maybe Warn has a scratch and dent offer/refurbished for noobs?

The search has a lot of information. However, I'm still trying to figure out what is best for me, my Jeep and my ARB.

Help. Please.
It will tell you what bolt pattern the bumper will take. Every winch has that in the specifications. The majority of the bolt patterns are the same. The one things you have to check is whether the roller bolts to the bumper or to the winch. You won't won't regret a WARN winch.

The only winch the instructions mention is the Warn powerplant. (I will gladly pay you teusday for a Warn Powerplant today!)
The fairlead blots to the bumper.

Now that I re-read that, I can see you meant that. I guess I was hoping you knew something about getting a great deal. Like you work for Warn or had something you could blackmail Dave over at Northridge 4x4 with.

If you've got a little bit of cash and a little bit of patience, a used Warn is the best value you will find in a winch.

I bought a used (4 pulls) 9.5ti with snythetic line for $700.

It's not perfect cosmetically, but it's rock-solid mechanically - I've put it through a fair number of "easy" pulls, one long pull that was fairly hard, and one short pull that was right on the verge of needing a snatch block. That short, hard pull had my alternator and battery squealing for mercy, but the winch didn't even blink.

Sure it would be nice to have a "large" winch......."IF" you can afford it. But a WARN M8000 is no slouch. It is a VERY good quality winch for the JK.

Default Works for me

Bought the ARB Deluxe Bull Bar and the Rugged Ridge 10.5K winch w/synthetic line bolted right up. Wanted an equivalent Warn but they were super expensive. Everything else is new so I never considered a used one.

I haven't wheeled colorado, but I've run around So Cal with a Bronco for about 15 years. Added a winch in year 2. I used it twice since, and only one of those was to pull me out. Check with your local running buddies about whether its really needed or not. Warn is a good mfg., they aren't the only ones. Avoid the made in china stuff, and you will probably be ok.

I don't mind used. Becuase it's going to be used after the first time I use it, Right? The Gamble I don't like is how the previous owner used it.
Are they selling it because the F'ed it up or just don't need it anymore?

I have a little bit of cash. It's the little bit of patience that I guess I'll have to work on. And then try not to spend that little bit of cash on something else.

This is the only one I can find that seems like a good deal is this: (and it's a hour and a half away from where I live)
Warn XD9000i - $800 (Firestone)
Warn DX9000i with multi-mount base and power cable. This will fit in any 2 inch receiver. The winch has been stored inside and used three times. Once to pull a Jeep Wrangler off the side of a steep hill. Then to pull a dead tree out of my front yard. And finally to pull a Landcruiser into a trailer. E-mail me if you are interested. This is a nice looking and working winch. You can tell it was stored indoors.

I would have to remove the hitch mount. But I think when spring comes around I can do better for cheaper... I hope.

That's not a bad deal for an XD9000I that looks to be in good shape...but I thinki that you're right in that you could find a somewhat better deal....but you probably won't find a used Warn that is in as close to new condition as that XD9000.

Deals like the one that I got or johnsmack got are a little bit harder to come by. They're out there, but you have ot find someone that NEEDS to sell quickly, or has been sitting on a reasonably priced Warn for at least six months and his wife is nagging him to get it out of the garage so that she doesn't have to worry about scratching her Honda.

I have had three Warns and all are gone to new owners now. I use them a lot and got tired of replacing the solonoids frequently. I have used for over 2 years a Superwich EPi 9 and it has been Perfect! Never had a Warn used as hard as this Superwinch has been used and it is still running just fine. Guess I am not a W fan like some are for gentle pulls the W is fine.
