1. pull your hand brake all the way up.
2. put your transmission in 1st gear
3. hold your hand brake with your right hand, take your foot off the brake and then put it on your clutch so that you can begin moving forward - if you start rolling back, the hand brake will help keep it to a minimal and enough so that you can focuse on moving forward.
4. with the hand brake still up, begin accellerating and let off your clutch slowly. when you feel your Jeep start to grab and move forward, slowly let off on the hand brake so that it is syncronized with the movement of your Jeep.
5. once you get going, release the hand brake all together.

it may take some getting used to but it does work and will keep you from burning out your clutch.

That is what i was going to say as that is how i was taught in the military.

having only 3:21 gears, I stall allot on steep off-road inclines as well. I see you saying to start in 4lo without the clutch in and the gears in 1st gear. wont the Jeep lurch forward when starting with the gears in 1st and then stall all over again. Ive never started in 4lo in 1st gear and the clutch out. what really happens?

sorry, that was a typo on my behalf. what i meant to say is 'gas'. your left foot should already be on the clutch - you take your rigth foot off the brake and place it onto the gas.

on a side note, you can start your jeep in 4LO without the clutch in and it won't lurch forward - so long as you don't gas it, you will start moving forward but not very fast - but again, that's a side note.

Im going to have to practice this technique a bit. I finally went up woods hill yesterday but stalled 2 times. So this technique should come in handy.

there is no foul in stalling. now, buring out your clutch for no good reason is another story all together.

I can drive a clutch just as good as most people. Just because someone asks for advice doesnt mean they dont know how to drive. I was just looking for a technique to use on hills and big rocks. Im originally from Indiana so i have almost no experience at all on steep grades or rocks (just mud and dirt).

As for everybody else's comments, thanks for the tips.

The rest of the group responded to the other sections of your questions very well. As for the hand throttle, there is one on the market and I have sent the company a couple of questions that I am waiting an answer for. here it is:

Hell, i thought the hand brake way was what everyone does...?
even with the old foot pedal parking break... rev it up with the clutch in, let it out till it starts pulling against the parking break and then pull the release handle.... and hang on... (old old 4xfun...)
