I have a warn 9.5cti in my 2011 Unlimited. It's wired direct at the moment, (I know, bad) but I want to add a relay and circuit breaker while I can still say it hasn't burned down. Warn says the winch will draw 425amps with a 9500lb line pull, but searching the web I've found breakers and relays only up to 200amps for 12V.
Where are people getting these items big enough for their winchs?

So just curious, does every winch need a solenoid installed? I know my superwinch i had on the last jeep i had came with one but I now I have a KingOne and it's connected directly to the battery.

Should have circuit breaker installed I suppose. Solenoid is just to be able to control the power to the winch on a switch. I am installing a winch kill switch in the truck so it's not powered all the time.
Thanks for the recommendations so far. The marine solenoid looks like its good for 85 amps only.

That's a better price! I guess Warn is charging for the extra wires and the brand name.


KANUEH, The solenoid on top of the winch is to control to power drawn form the battery.
And also to determine the direction it will spin the motor etc.

The relay (above) is not required.
It allows you to put a power/ kill switch on ur dash.
It also helps stop your winch being hot wired and wrapped around ur JK.. Extreme, I know but it happens in some neighborhoods.

I might be wrong, but isn't an 85amp solenoid / relay enough?
Your winch only pulls 400+ Amps with 10,000+ lbs of load.
My winch only draws 75 amps with no load according to the manual.

Would the solenoid not burn up then as soon as there is a load on the winch?

Well the high amps are drawn when the winch is working on load.
When your finger is not on the IN or OUT switch it should not pull those amps.
Winches have a mechanical brake which allows it to idol or hold under load.

So as long as your not actually operating the winch under load, 85amp solenoid should be fine.

All you need is a starter solenoid any auto parts stores ,and it's controlled by a switch..

And your right it is out of an old ford anything lol!
