Both light in your diagram need to be isolated from each other or your left and right strobe will not work.
The way you have it now switch 1 will light both lights
Switch 2 will also flash both lights at the same time because they are connected together

Diodes are like one way electricity gates.

need to know Wattage of the lights to determine correct size

Yes. The diodes only allow current to flow in one direction. The triangle points in the direction the current will flow and the line (cathode) is like a shield preventing the current from flowing in the other direction. That will prevent backfeeding the other light. It's pretty easy to solder them in.

If the diode thing is to difficult you can use a double pole double throw (DPDT) relay

Haha...I was just drawing up another option with 2 SPDT.

For the mode select do you recommend me using a momentary switch instead?

Yes I would use a momentary for the mode. I was just drawing up the number 1 and 2 switches for you.
