Default What can MyGig do?

So I got my '08 2 door Rescue Green Sahara at the dealer waiting for them to get a MyGig installed before I take delivery. I'm going from a Si Civic with Nav to this Jeep (mostly because I need to tow a jetski) and had an '03 Rubicon new years ago and kicked myself for getting rid of it. Okay, so there is a question in this post. I love my Civic Nav and the Honda has been rated one of the best factory units. I will never own another vehicle without a Nav unit (so I have convinced myself). So why waiting for this Jeep to be ready, I got online and found this forum and read about all the problems with this MyGig. I don't even know what it can do. Never seen one in a Chrysler/Jeep model and when I go on the Jeep website it doesn't say crap about it.

What are the cool things this can do besides crackle and pop and have you plot a course to your dealer for service and replacement?

You can load CDs and it'll copy them up to 20GB and label them? You can upload jpeg pictures as a screen saver or something? What about videos? MP4 uploads? Can you watch DVDs on this while in Park or is there a way to disable or by-pass the Park feature to watch them while driving?

Any info and cool stuff about this feature would be great info.

Thanks in advance!

Cool - thanks. So this thing really plays DVDs on the main unit when in Park? Is that true?

Too, there is a steering wheel mounted button to activate the voice command on my Honda's NAV, is there something similar for the Jeep's? Or do you have to reach over and touch the unit to use the hands free?

Last question (for now)...does the MyGig have real time traffic capability for a price through Sirius and if so is it free for a year? Don't you get a year free of Sirius?

There is a ipod connector device/object that allows it to sort of get some music from it. I had no way of organizing it or anything. It gave me 27(4 songs/page) pages of music and I have many more mp3s on it than that. I'm going to finally read the manual and see what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks for the info. I did see in pics that it has a female aux input in the front of the unit. I used a male/male cable between my iPod headphone outlet and the Nav in my Honda and that worked out good. It doesn't charge the iPod so I also had to get one of those traveling cig/lighter iPod holder/chargers.

Damn...I have to wait till next week before I get my ride. Driving 14 hours round trip to get it....'08 2 dr Sahara, both tops, automatic, MyGig, limited slip, remote start, smokers group, engine block heater, power convenience group, tow package - EVERY SINGLE AVAILABLE OPTION except side air bags for $27,200. I think it's worth the drive and the wait - so hopefully this MyGig won't disappoint on my first drive which is 7 hours back home over 2 passes.

Dude, where are you going to get it? I'm in Bellevue and thought I went a ways to get mine -- Dave Smith Motors in Kellogg ID.

I do have the MyGig installed, and haven't really experienced many of the problems that so many others here have complained of.

There are some things you might want to be aware of however -- and this is by no means an exhaustive list, you might want to spend some time searching the forums as most or all of your questions have been answered many times over in multiple threads:

--Yes the MyGig comes with a (now 30gb) Hard Drive. You should be aware that at least 12GB of this contains maps, so the MyGig only has 8GB - 18gb space for movies, music and pictures depending on whether you have the 20 or 30gb model.

--Yes, you can play DVDs while in park. Currently the only way to enable playback in drive is to purchase either a FreeGig or AllGig unit from Nav-TV ($400.00 or $750.00 depending on the version). There is no wire to clip or ground that will enable playback while in drive. You should also note that there have been reports of some 08's with manual trannies being unable to even view DVDs with the e-Brake set as the ECU does not properly report brake status to the MyGig. DCX is aware of this issue, and is supposedly working on a fix, but I don't expect it any time soon.

--You should be aware that in some states, video playback that is viewable by the driver -- even in park -- is illegal, so playback can be disabled by the dealer. If you purchase your vehicle in one of these states, then most likely when you take possession of it, video playback will be disabled. You can have it enabled by taking it to a dealer in a state that permits video playback while in park, and they will be able to enable it (with the exception of the system bug listed above)

--Yes, you can upload Music into the MyGig. Unfortunately the management of this music leaves a lot to be desired (particularly if you upload a lot of music) and there have been many reports of poor playback quality on music stored on the Hard Drive.

--No, there are no remote controls for the MyGig in the Wrangler. Adjusting any setting requires reaching over and touching the head unit (As I type this I ask myself how lazy we have become as a society -- but I guess many would argue that it is safer to not have to remove your hand s from the steering wheel)

--No, regardless of what you are told by a Dealer, read in a pamphlet or online, Uconnect and Voice Command are not CURRENTLY available in the Wrangler. Even though I am typing this, I do have both enabled on my rig, but it has been done with some Beta software and parts from other DCX vehicles. The software update (9.599) is not yet publicly available. I know it is coming, but it won't be working for your drive home.

--No, there is currently no way to add your own trails or maps to a MyGig. It will record trails, but the only way to do that is to actually drive those trails (or new roads)

--No, the MyGig will not control or play media from an Ipod. You can however play audio on your Ipod through the MyGig aux input port. You will still want access to your Ipod for song or play list selection. This type of setup does require that you connect a jack to the front of your unit. There are write ups on the board by people who have tucked the wiring behind panels, but there is still a jack plugged into the front of your unit.

--Yes there is an Ipod adapter available, but it is an FM Modulator so audio quality suffers. This adapter does not enable any Ipod playback control (but it will charge the Ipod while connected) and is designed for the Ipod to be in the glove box, making it difficult to manage playback while driving.

--There are currently only two ways to upload media files to your MyGig; ripping a CD/DVD or a USB thumb drive. CD/DVD ripping (or copying data files) is reported to be a very time consuming task -- the MyGig does this very slowly. Media files on a USB storage device can be played or viewed directly from the device or copied to the internal HD and played from there. You should note that an iPod is not considered a USB Storage Device and is not currently compatible with the USB connector on the MyGig. ***Correction***I have been told that there are users out there who are able to upload music from their iPod directly to the MyGig through the USB port. For clarity, this means that the music uploaded is stored on and played by the MyGig, not the iPod.

--No, the MyGig does not have easily accessible aux in or out connectors on the back. There are people working on a harness design and programming to support this.

--Yes, the MyGig has limited support for Sirius Traffic updates, but in the Pac-NW as far as I have been able to tell, this only includes road construction and limited accident data, not actual traffic flow. I have been told to expect this feature in an upcoming release of the MyGig OS.

--Yes, the MyGig can be installed in your JK and No, the dealer will not have to program the computer to accept it. The MyGig is not programmed to your vehicle either -- this means that you could take it out and put it in any DCX CAN bus vehicle and it will work. The unit in the JK is backward compatible with other DCX CAN bus vehicles while the they are not forward compatible with the JK.

--No, you cannot buy one of the cheaper MyGig versions on Ebay or anywhere else and expect it to work in your JK. You must install a RER model that has the correct bus interface to work in a JK.As of the writing of this post, Dealers are selling them for ~$2K, and they can be had in the secondary market for as little as ~$1500.00. If you pay less, you will most likely get a version that will not work in a Wrangler. Before you ask, there is no current way to make them work either.

--Harmon Kardon is the manufacturer of the MyGig.

If the Mods would like, I'd be willing to contribute to a MyGig FAQ that could be posted to the top of this board.

You guys are awesome - thanks for the great info and skydyvyr I am getting it at Dave Smith Motors. I just figured it would take about 7 hours to get there from Olympia as I'm including the many stops if I take my girlfriend with me as her bladder is the size of a walnut. They still had not received a part for the install so I have to wait till early next week...looks like there might be some snow somewhere along the way.

Bummer about all the MyGig woes - would be great to have a devoted MyGig thread or some sort of section for this device as it seems to be kicking into full gear with upcoming updates and some stuff to get around all it's limitations.
