Hopefully this answers your question.

The head units for the most part will be the same, the upgraded systems will usually run a separate amp to power the speakers and the sub.

Typically on OEM head units that do not come with a factory sub, you need to tap into your left and right speaker lines to run a line output converter to the amp for the sub. This will provide the audio signal, but you will also need to tap into the remote power on line from the head unit to provide an on/off signal to the amp. Additionally to provide power to the sub amplifier you need to run a line from your battery with an inline fuse to the amp itself, and also provide a ground for it.
