Question about installing MYGIG radio
#23
I think there's a few different variables going on here which everyone may be over looking. I'm not 100% sure since I haven't ever worked with the RBZ radio, but instead I've installed different flavors of the RER, RHR and REN MyGig's. The RER, RHR, and REN are manufactured by Harman Automotive. The RBZ is manufactured by Mitsubishi. My feeling is there may be 2 different RBZ MyGig radios and they work differently than the Harman radios. There's probably 1 that works with the Infinity System and one that works without the Infinity system. So reading through everyone's posts, some seem to have no problems, while others have had no luck, or problems persist.
So no one seems to mention if they have the Infinity system and no one seems to know which flavor of the RBZ they have but these can be key in if it works or not.
Here's the variables which I feel may be going on.
V1: RBZ #1 (Works with OEM Infinity System)
V2: RBZ #2 (Works without OEM Infinity System).
V3: Your JK has Infinity
V4: Your JK doesn't have Infinity
The way that the REN, RHR, and RER MyGig's work. When the Radio turns on, it will communicate over the CAN bus to see if an Infinity amp is connected to the system. If it detects that the OEM Infinity amp is present, the radio will set it's audio outputs to a fixed line level output and additionally send a Can message, telling the amplifier to turn on. The amplifier then controls all the volume adjustments, balance, fade, Tone controls.. etc, when you make adjustments on the radio. If the radio does not detect that an Infinity amp is present in the system, then it goes into a variable output mode, stand alone mode of operation, where all the volume, tone, balance, and fade controls are done inside of the radio.
So if you understand all that, then you will be able to see if there are 2 different versions of the RBZ radios, then you have about a 25% chance of the radio working if you are unsure of what you have.....which is about what I'm seeing here.
For example:
I am aware of the High Speed vs Low Speed, but the 2011+ HSB is somehow different of the previous years. Purhaps, your '10 RBZ was produced in late '10 and had the newer style HSB. I just know that my '09 RBZ with HSB does not work in my '11 JKU but it does work in a friends '10 Liberty (which is also a HSB).
Its easy enough. Give it a shot and let us know. Also, let us know the model # if you can.

I am with Aaron on this one. I went through an RBZ and a REN with my 11JKU. The REN played but I lost steering wheel controls and no sound from my sound bar or sub. The RBZ would turn on and go through all functions but no sound from any speaker. Both systems were high bus. I finally found a 430N RHB that works great. I was told it maybe compatibility with the infinity system which I have and the head unit.
The Infinity doesn't have anything to do with the BUS, it is only in amp and speakers. That wouldn't cause a compatability issue. The REN is an older radio (replaced by RBZ) and didn't support the same steering wheel controls, so that would make sense. The BUS wouldn't cause the speakers to not work. That is a radio or connector issue. Did you try a CD, or just the radio?
You want V1 matched with V3 or V2 matched with V4 to get a working RBZ system.

That being said , I have the infinity system. Now how do u figure out which RBZ u have? I understand your explanation , I think the hardest part for everyone is to figure out exactly how to read the units (stereo) . And which is "Actually" compatible! This thread would make an excellent compatibility chart! What year JK u have - with or without infinity - model # - high bus / low bus and if everything works! Based on facts ( actual installs) not what everyones heard or read!

To put a list together of which Model # works with which years and what stereo options (ie. infinity) and then have it placed as a sticky.. I have the infinity system and during my research, the only conclusive info i could on RBZ vs year was going to be whether or not the SW Controls would work or not. No actual mention of whether. Personally, i wouldn't think that having infinity or non-infinity would matter to the head unit, but it could i suppose.

Found this, not sure how accurate and it doesn't mention the infinity!

It would be nice to know the differences between these different part numbers.
