Default Power Wire Gauge Required?

Ok, If I'm running an extended length of wire from my dash, all the way back to the rear of a 21ft trailer to power a backup cam there, will 14 gauge wire do it? The camera only draws about 50 mAmps....

...before anyone says just hook to reverse taillight...I want access to the camera while moving forward, so I need the power upfront....

..anyone?

For a 50ma draw, 14 gauge wire will support your needs.
Don't know how many feet your run will be, however even up to a 20ft run, your voltage drop will be negligible.

Thanks for the reply.

The run will be close to 40ft total...From the dash of the Jeep, to the back of the trailer...

Even a forty foot run will not reduce the voltage that much, maybe .5 volts if that, but remember, with the engine running, you'll have about 13.9-15.2VDC.

You can run down to 18ga with no problems. I have powered large I.R. cams with 100' runs using 18/2.

Perfect, that is what I bought. The power wire that came with the camera looks to be only 20-22ga, so 18 it is. TY!

For a camera, it doesnt matter you wont heat up the wire and they work at like 8v. One thing id worry about is noise... @21' thats alot of antenna haha! Inside the trailer I usually like to go with a video amplifier, If you have a 7wire hookup power it all off the auxilary, depending on who wired it that auxilary may be a reverse light power... so hook it all up to that
But seriously invest in a video amp

Video amp may indeed be needed, but don't worry with it till you give it a try. After all, as long as the picture is clear enough then a little noise won't be that big of a deal for you...right? It'll remind you of the days that you had to get off the couch to turn a knob on the tv.

In that case, I'll just get a roll of tin-foil and wrap my antenna up. That should do it!
