Default PICS: Sub Woofer & Amp Mounting.

Been doing some recent mods to the audio system in my Wrangler ....

About a year ago i tossed the factory head unit (after the free xm subscription expired).

I installed a Pioneer DEH-P9400BH (my other vehicles have pioneer P-bus units in them), this allows me to use ONE XM/Sirus tuner for 3 vehicles...i just disconnect the GEX-P920XM tuner and move it to what ever vehicle I'm driving.

I have the XM Tuner mounted w/ quick disconnects under the passenger seat of the jeep, for easy access/removal.

I recently decided i needed more power & a subwoofer....so i installed an Alpine PDX-v9 5 channel amp (100x4 & 500x1)
I picked the Alpine PDX-v9 because it has a very small foot print. It doesn't hurt that Powerful, Clean (.005 - .03 % THD) & stable across a wide voltage range (11-16vdc).

Im a huge fan of JL Audio (have 'em in another vehicle) - but their size is prohibitive, for me, in the jeep.
I always want to retain an unobtrusive (if not factory) look, when i do my installs....HIDDEN from prying eyes, just clean sound.

I was originally gonna build a low profile box for a shallow mount sub, but a friend of mine helped me create a better design, that took up almost NO space.

I used a Pioneer TS-SW2501s2 (10 inch, 2 ohm)....you could probably go 12 inches or even more if you weren't going for a flush mount, like i did. A top mounted speaker would permit a larger speaker.

I also used HUSH Mat to dampen any rattles & vibrations.

Heres some pics -

Using some aluminum tubing, I raised the Amp a little more than 1 inch off the floor (to protect from moisture if the carpet gets wet, etc.
Alpine does offer a MARINE version of this amp (75wx4 & 300x1) - but i wasn't willing to sacrifice the power.

SOME (slight) modification of the TILT forward seat was required (i cut the bar off the back of the seat rails). Ive seen no change in the operation of the seat, since there is a heavier cross bar tying the seat rails together at the FRONT of the seat.

heres a picture of the sub TOP mounted...before we backed the board & flush cut a hole so the sub could sit flush with the floor

and now w/ the sub sunken into the board & flush with the floor -

Here you can see that I've lined the storage tub/pan w/ HushMat (dynamat like) material.

Now with the board carpeted & in place -

We also built a cover - for security (to make the sub invisible to any prying eyes)....and the cover also allows me to still carry groceries or heavy items that could fall on or damage the subwoofer. The cover bolts down (using t-nuts threaded thru the bottom board).

I've since installed a Smittybilt G.E.A.R. tailgate cover/storage.
Everything i had in the factory underfloor storage bin is in the smittybilt bags (jumper cables, zip ties, Cobra c75-wx CB Radio and a few other items.

the large bag has a 30 foot tow strap & warn receiver shackle and I've STILL got plenty of room for more stuff in the bags if i need.

The system sounds good, really good...even at 80mph w/ the top down.

Did you actually build a sealed box for the storage pan in the back or is the sub just sitting there on a board over the top of it? Did you mold the bottom out of fiberglass?

NO, I didn't have to build a box & no fiberglass-ing was necessary.
I simply lined the pan with hush mat (aka dynamat).

The volume of the pan is about 1 cubic foot - the sub specs calls for .6 - 1.0 cubic feet (depending on the type of box, ported, non ported or bandpass).

The sub & board are screwed down to the sheet metal & the hushmat around the edge creates a seal, there is NO body panel buzz.

I've got pretty much the same amp setup. Mine is just sitting on the carpet for now, just wondering how you mounted yours?

I just ran some self tapping sheet metal screws thru the carpet & into the floor (make certain you won't hit anything).

yup, 2012 sport, 2 door.
theres NO room in these things ! an unlimited has the added luxury of more space (behind the 2nd seat/row) & more room UNDER the front seats too.

I thought about putting the AMP in the storage bin or mounting it to a sub/box but I didn't want to give up music if i had to remove the sub box (and the amp as a result) to carry anything (like our old english sheep dog or our kids college stuff, in the spring and fall).

I also didn't like the idea of the amp being able to WALK w/ the sub/box.

The space under the seat isn't used (can't even put a safe under there, because of the tilt forward seat).

How did you make the cover for the top of the sub? Mesh? Plexi-glass?

i used the same MDF as the sub mount (in the pics) - the top/cover board has stand offs (strips of ripped mdf) down the long edges and down the center - to create an air gap as well as to provide some reinforcement
