New Sound Setup
#11
I"m installing a Mtx RFL 600d amp under the seat with two 10" MTX Thunder 5510 subs. I made a shelf that goes across the back that bolts to the bolts that hold the top down in the rear. The shelf is alumimum and has expanded metal for a bottom. I plan on to use a racket strap to hold them down and if I want to use the shelf for something else to haul I can just take them out. So far it seems to work really good and sounds great. Today a pulled the drivers seat out to mount the sub but I just screwed it down to the floor and spaced it so it was level and it is off the floor some, but I'm not worried about water cause I leave my hard top on all the time, like the AC in the summer to hot where I live. The one big thing when I went with this amp was to make sure it had a cooling fan and that it could get good air flow. One thing I'm worried about is if I crank up the amp to much it could break out the rear window right now I have the remote set at a little past min. and that sounds perfect to me. I did adjust it to max once and it blows your hair around and that was fun. I'll post some pictures later if you want, the wind got to strong here today so I had to quit early I should have it finish by the end of the week.

I also will be running a PDX series amp under the dash. The amp alone would probably blow your budget. You may want to look into that Bass Link that was mentioned earlier.
What, in specific, sounds bad about your system? Muddy? Flat? No low end? No high end?

Thanks for all the advice and help guys, im learning as i look into this alot.
Ive been looking at the monoblock mentioned earlier by Topher and am going to look more
into the basslink. For subs so far i have only looked at bazookas. Im thinking my first stage is going to be the Amp and subwoofer, and most likely a new HU cause i dont want to have to start tapping into wires. After i see how that sounds i will go replacing the actual speakers from there.
As far as what i dont like about my system, i would say its just all around weak. Nothing special about the high ends, really no bass at all, and not nearly loud enough, especially
with the top and doors off.

You might want to look and see if someone has an Infinity system they'd be willing to sell you. I'd be far cheaper than aftermarket speakers, and amp, and the installation costs. It would be pretty plug and play. I've not heard the base line head unit but I can't imagine it's cranking out excellent sound.

As far as replacing the factory speakers go, they really aren't that bad if you have a good head unit powering them. I have always saved up and done one big replacement, but I did it in stages on this Jeep. After hearing the sound I gained from a new HU, I'm considering leaving the factory speakers alone.

the 1st things I've done to my jeep have been HIDS and upgrading my sound system. I went with JVC KD-AHD59 a set of polk 651S (sound bar) and 6501 components (front), with a Kicker ZX350.4 to power them, and a kicker 750.1 amp with a 12" L5 solo baric in a box for bass.
the difference in just the head unit was very good, I usually use Sony decks, but went with the JVC because of an availability issue from crutchfield. The JVC matches the stock dash lighting perfectly and is pretty simple to use, plus the ipod control seems to be decent
after adding the speakers and 4 channel amp, WOW, what a difference, crystal clear and enough power to actually hear the music with the windows down.
If I hadn't already had the sub and box, and I was going from square 1, I may just upgrade the deck and speakers and call it a day for a while, or maybe just add a bazooka or something for bass, I don't think you really have to spend a huge amount of money if you just want a little bass
however, if you have the cash a set up like mine wouldn't be a bad choice. if you don't include the sub and box I really don't have that much into it. under 500 for the head unit, speakers, and 4 channel amp...and i'd take it over the infinity system any day of the week...ebay is your friend for stereo equipment, just beware of the sellers, do your research on them before you buy, but for a HU i'd go with crutchfield or 1 of the company's that include all the necessary stuff for an install, the radio harness is not cheap
just some food for thought
oh and fat max sound deadening seems to work quite well to eliminate vibrations and is cheaper than dynamat
