Default MyGIG RER 2008 - Upload MP3 via USB Thumb Drive

Hey all,
I've got a stock MyGIG RER in my 2008 Rubicon.

I'm trying to upload MP3 through a 16GB USB thumb drive. I got an error of "Invalid USB device detected". I've since repartitioned the USB drive to reduce the capacity to 8GB and 3.75GB with the same results.

What sized USB thumb drive have you used to successfully upload your mp3s?

when you repartitioned the drive, was it to multiple partitions?

For some reason I think there is something weird with 4GB+ drives.
(That being said, I have a gaggle of 2GB drives, so I will have those until they die, then get whatever is cheap/free. So I know it works great with 2GB ones. Also I'm just a bit more than a 2GB copy from work, so anymore and I'd have to wait in a parking lot somewhere. )

I've used a 4GB SanDisk Cruzer Micro with success.

Has anyone tried a USB powered external hard drive? I'm thinking about buying one. I have a bunch of music that I need to load. If it works I think that would be the easiest solution.

I've used an old (2004) PNY USB 2.0 128 MB flash drive. It's a plain FAT file system on the drive.
