Default Mygig hard drive swap?

So I read the newer models of JKs are getting 30 gig myGig radios, correct? And how much of that space is used for the map and all the other goodies?

I was just thinking, since it's a hard drive and all, is it at all possible to somehow crack the radio open and swap out the hard drive yourself for something bigger? I mean, 30 gigs isn't that much especially for folks with big music collections and even if it's a laptop sized drive there's plenty out there over 30 gigs.. so, is this possible? Or does it still need some kind of OS in the hard drive for it to function? What if you swapped the drive and then if it didn't work, you take it to your dealer to somehow get the software reinstalled on it, so in the end you'd have the same thing just with a bigger drive?

I was wondering the same thing.. Why could you not take the HD out of the radio install it in a HD holder or the like and copy the data from the 20GB to a larger 100GB or so drive?

I however am not willing to take my radio apart to try it.. since I dont really use the music storage part of the HD and have plenty of space on it.

while I'm at it, here's another mygig question... (don't have my JK yet so I'm wondering)

It's got a USB port right? Can you connect an iPod to the USB and control it from the radio? Or, can you connect your ipod to it to copy all your files in at least?

Yes it has a USB Port, No you cannot control an iPod from it and No you cannot copy from the iPod to the HD.

that's no fun :( so how do you transfer stuff to it? do you have to burn a whole bunch of blank cds full of all your music? or do you have to put in the real cd and let it rip the tracks itself?

I converted all my music to MP3's copied the whole lot over to a USB Jump Drive and imported them that way.

I also went through all the MP3's and corrected the title's, artists, and other info for each song.. was a pain in the ass but worth it.

On a recent 24-hours drive I got a little bored and did a little expariament.

I plugged my ipod nano 2nd Gen 8-gig into the USB slot with the ipod cable and the Mygig actually sync'd the entire ipod library over,...now I have some duplicates but I now know it works!

who will be the brave one and try this HD conversion??? Someone should email Steve at Harmon Becker and ask him. He will be able to give ya the scoop on it.

I Wish Mygig would store more Photos and have a slide show option..

hmm, it might work if you set your iPod to Enable Disk Use under iTunes.. then I think when you plug it into a computer it will treat it like an external hard drive.. so that might work 1 way to find out... someone buy me a jeep!

What's this Steve guys email? I'l drop him a line about HD swaps and a few other things I was curious about.

(Why the hell can't I have shuffle play or pause songs? This is a high tech piece of kit, and it's lacking features that came out like 10 years ago?)
