Anyone know how to remove the drivers side front speaker cover in an '07 Wrangler with the upgraded stereo? I have a noise that I can reproduce by pushing in on the drivers side speaker cover, so I'd like to remove the cover to localize it further.

Someone should do a write up on removing the front speakers and add it to the FAQ thread.

 

Here are the instructions for removing the speakers from the dash:

INSTRUMENT PANEL SPEAKER – DRIVER

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Remove the instrument panel end cap.
3. Remove the steering column opening cover.
4. Remove the amplifier. Refer to (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/AUDIO/AMPLIFIER - REMOVAL).
5. Disconnect the electrical connector.
6. Remove the mounting fasteners in the left side of the instrument panel.
7. Remove the speaker mounting fasteners.
8. Remove the speaker (2) by carefully pulling the left side of the instrument panel outward until there is sufficient room to remove the speaker through the end cap area.



INSTRUMENT PANEL SPEAKER – PASSENGER

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Remove the glove box.
3. Remove the instrument panel end cap.
4. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
5. Remove the speaker mounting fasteners.
6. Remove the speaker

 

Thanks for the replies - let me update my issue.

Last night, with directions from this board in hand, I removed the IP end cap (between the door and the IP) - it just pops out, then the 2 pieces of plastic underneath the steering column. I was able to isolate the errant noise to the plate of steel in front of the amplifier - the plate that has screws at the 11, 1 and 6 o clock positions. By tightening up all of the screws with my ratchet - particularly the screw at 6 o'clock, I was able to eliminate the noise. Now my Jeep is back to being solid and bank-vault quiet.

Let me tell you, I had a heck of a time removing the driver side stock speaker and replacing it with a polk set I purchased. The instructions already posted show a good representation of how to take off all of the plastic parts. The key here is to remove the steal dash mounting underneath the left side of the steering wheel. This step makes room for removal of the speaker from the speaker box mounting. The bottom bolt was easy and the top bolt may be reached with a couple of extensions and a wratchet. The extensions "just" fit between the steering column and the plastic just under the speedometer area. I hope this helps. This discovery took me days to figure out.

 

Did you just replace the speakers??? How do they sound? Was it worth the money/effort?

I replaced my stock speakers with Polk db351's. Here is the url for the specs at Circuit City (they had a special online that the store was able to match = (buy one set of speakers and get the second set half off):

The sound greatly improved and I am very happy with the quality of the speakers. I must say that there is still a need for a sub. I am going to do this in time.

In addition to the speakers being great in sound quality, they are a marine grade speaker (perfect for a Jeep owner who may get a little "damp" from time to time.)
