Default HID and DRL

hi everyone

Im starting my first mod and install some HID headlights. I was reading through forums and i cant seem to find if having HIDs installed and switching them onto the DRL setting is ok or bad? Is this fine for HID's or will they burn up because of the dimmer setting?

Thanks you

maybe you should look at one of the kits that has the high beam still halogen but the low beam is HID..

MOST DRL's are simply the high beam circuit running at a reduced capacity....

and then make sure you drive the high beam directly(hopefully the high beam bulb is standard and not high wattage) and not through a relay... the reduced voltage would destroy a relay...

In my journeys aroud the web, I have seen several kits advertised to do this on vehicles that come equipped with HIDs, so it probably requires a few extra parts.

If a search in the forum produces no results, I am sure Google can generate many hits.

It is ironic though to install aftermarket lights because they are brighter, and then to want to dim them down.

Our Jeep has several different DRL modes and it probably depends on regional laws and regulations which one is active. Here are the modes that I recall.

Low Beam at reduced intensity
High Beam at reduced intensity
Fog lights
Park Lights
Nothing
European mode (All lights at regular intensity)

If yours is running either the low beam or high beam at reduced intensity you have to be careful because the lights are not simply fed with a reduced voltage. They are fed with a Pulse Width Modulation signal that has an average voltage of 7V. This is fine for a standard bulb, but bad things happen if you try to run relays or ballasts for HIDs off of this setup.

When I replaced my headlights I switched my DRL (Which are required on new vehicles sold in Canada) to European mode and then installed a new harness that used the existing wiring to trigger some relays and higher gauge wire.

Cheers

My research when I converted my Tahoe was HID's do not like to run at lower voltage or chopped DC waveform (common method to dim headlights for DRL function). If you notice many factory applications, they have separate bulbs for the DRL function when running HID's. With alittle research I think you will confirm this.

When I first installed my bi-xenon kit I wasn't aware that having DRLs would cause any issues. The problem I had was that if the lights were running on DRL mode the relay for the HID kit would buzz really loud but if I manually turn on the lights, the buzzing stops. To fix the problem I bought the AEV Procal module and flashed the pcm to run my fogs as drl. No more buzzing.

AEV ProCal will let you change the DRL to many different setups. Avoiding the use of the headlights for DRL
