It may just be a result of the material used for the screen. It reminds me of the screens on flat screen monitors and laptops. I would be interested to see other head units w/ DVD screen in the sun.

 

pioneer head units have pretty much gone to crap. kenwood and alpine are top of the line.

 

Has anyone built a good enclosure that doesn't take up too much space? I snowboard very often and need as much space in the back. The Stealth Box is super nice and saves space, but not looking to spend 800 or 900 or it. That's why I was leaning towards the Select Increments Stealth Pod, because it's not too expensive at just 180 for the enclosure. If anyone has other ideas on a sub enclosure or where to hide an amp let me know.

 

A guy on here designed a pretty sweet dual enclosure for under the rear seat of his jku, also had the amp in it. Search is your friend.

I did see that one. He had two Kickers in the back of his rear seats. I would love to do that, but don't have the skills. Super sleek and nice looking tho.

 

I stayed with my stock head unit to avoid the expensive harness and hassle if conversion kits. I'm not sure how much of an audiophile you are (I'm not) but I'm a musician who loves blasting music in a car with a nice sounding system. Here is my setup:
Replaced all factory speakers with Rockford Fosgate PUNCH. 3 way 6.5" in the soundbar and 6.5" component in the front. The tweeters look awesome (metal grilles with small RF logo) and have built in crossovers - really easy install. I also cut open some old pillows and stuffed the speaker boxes with the 'poly'. I then added in a small amplified bazooka tube which fits under the rear seat. As I said, it's not a flashy system for those really serious into car audio but it sounds really great, top on or off. Total cost was about $300 (found the speaker sets on eBay - new, just discounted). Also - it is more than loud and crisp enough without any additional amps.

 

Good to hear someone post their system. I'm not an audiophile, but I do appreciate a good system. So you didn't replace the headunit or stock amplifier? I'm going to keep your route in mind if mine fails.

 

Yeah originally I had this big 'master plan' if a stereo upgrade but I don't like when things don't look factory clean and it started turning more and more expensive/complicated so I just left the original head unit as is. The sub has a small amp in it (just enough to power itself) and the head unit has no issues powering the speaker set on it's own - especially considering you're mostly just pumping mids/highs through them it's loud enough IMO and sounds great. To be honest the speakers don't sound half bad without the sub if you have to take it out for more space etc. as well.

 

Apparently crutchfield currently has a sale on the Infinity Basslink for $180 - a similar idea to the bazooka tube in that it's self amplified and has crossovers. (note, also much better sounding than the stock infinity sub)

 

Yeah I've heard the Basslink and liked it. I think i'm going to go with the JL Audio StealthBox.
