Default Has anyone have their battery just die on them without notice?

My wife and I drove to anza borrego desert park this past weekend and had our jeep's battery die on us. My jeep is 2012 and haven't had any issues with it and I had nothing electrical added on. Funny thing is that the jeep was fine starting right up 30 min prior to the issue.
We drove to an offroad scenic area, shut the jeep off, walked around for 30 min and tried to start the jeep back up. When I tried to start the jeep, I got nothing.
We finally had the roadside assistance come give us a jump but my question is, can the battery die so early and without any previous symptoms? After getting the jeep started, it couldn't hold charge at all. While driving to nearest town with auto parts store, jeep would shut off and on whenever I would throttle and the light was dimming.

In hot environments batteries have a tendency to short out internally so they "Die" all at once (I was told once that what happens is one of the plates inside the battery flakes off and touches the plate next to it and that is what causes the short). In cold environments they just loose power so you get a "Warning" when you start and it turns over very slowly.

Here in the desert, batteries go out like that all the time. No warning, they are just done. They only seem to last 2-3 years here because of the heat.

I knew heat would have an adverse effect on the battery but it wasn't that hot on the day that I happened.
I guess my mishap is a warning to people going to an isolated location that's prone to get hot; take a battery booster with you just in case your jeep's battery decides to die on you.

Washboard roads kill batteries like that--tow truck driver in Death Valley was quoted saying that about five years ago when a forum member's Jeep died at Eureka Dunes. We lost TWO batteries in two Jeeps during the recent four day, 160 mile f-stop Arkansas run of four Jeeps. One Jeep was so bad it took two batteries jumped to it before it cranked, and he had all kinds of flickering dash lights until we got him a new battery. My Jeep has dual-batts, so I just pushed the boost button to tie them and cranked right up. Dual-batts and batteries designed for high vibration service (such as AGM) are highly recommended if you really get out there in remote areas.

I've had that happen to a couple of batteries down here in Florida (once with my daughter's Neon and once with my Charger). Just dies one day with no warning.

Yea...
Since i've installed the new battery, the jeep drives fine. I just hope I didn't f anything up since I'm pretty sure I was just running electrical power straight from the alternator since the damn battery wouldn't charge for around 60 miles.
Every time I would throttle, the dash Christmas tree came up like you just started your car with the warning chime and the speedo was constantly jumping up and down.

I had much the same experience except the stock battery was giving signs of giving out. I went to Sears and bought a Die Hard Platinum.
