In Dash Navigation Question
On my 09, I have the indash multimedia navigation system with GPS.
Problem is when the GPS is activated, sometimes it shows exactly where I am and other times it shows my location no where near where I am.
If parked in my driveway and I turn it on, t shows my location as the other end of town.
My question is, does it sound like an easy fix or a bad unit that needs to be replaced?
Where is the antenna for the unit located?
Thanks for any help.

Seems to be a very common problem. Mine does this intermittently (like maybe a few times a year).
It seems the antennae (which is under the plastic dash top right above your radio) it not very good at picking up satellites. You can go from 0 to 6 or 7, then right back to zero - that's my experience anyway.

My problem is a bit different - it shows where I am
and even shows me driving down the road accurately BUT, more than once during a trip, it stopped navigating to my destination. Continued to show where I was but would not navigate.
The Gramin NUVI I bought on my last trip to cover for the Jeep's peculiarities works just fine though. Cost a lot less than the untrustworthy Jeep nav!

I just finished a cross country trip from Washington state to Florida and I had the same problem. It pissed me off quite a bit especially when I'm traveling and I'm in a "foreign" location. I'm thinking about having the thing replaced before I head back to Washington, but if it is going to continue to have the same problem then I guess I haven't changed a thing. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Im thinking about taking it to the dealer and tell them whats its doing and have them fix it.
IMHO, one of the reasons I picked this Jeep was it had this system and for what it cost, it should work a whole lot better than it does.
Ill post the findings.

The problem is the compass sensor is also mounted under the top cover above the Mygig.. (The compass sensor is the black box attached to the top cover)
I relocated the compass sensor and left the Sat sensor there and then updated the MyGig to the newest version of software 2.043 and I have never had a issue since. In fact I am picking up 6 to 8 satellites all the time now.

How did you accomplish upgrading the software?
The compass works fine on mine. ITs just the onscreen navi part that isnt working right.
Im getting to the point where I cant trust it.
Thanks for the replies. Ill have it checked out.

My in-dash computer uses an external GPS receiver. With the soft top on, I mount it in the padding on top of the sport cage. There is not clearance to do this with the hard top, so I have thrown the receiver on the dash near the windshield and sometimes I tuck it under the dash panel with the compass module.
The signal strength/time of acquisition is hampered slightly at the front of the dash, and is very poor when under the dash panel. I had assumed it was because of vertical windshield and the steel header directly above recvr; I had not considered any interference from the compass module.
Either way, relocation of the antenna may help.

GPS is meant to be used with a clear line of sight from the GPS antenna to the Satellites. Each piece of plastic, fabric whatever you put in between the LOS will reduce its reception. WAAS helps with this but you still want to have the best LOS that you can get for your GPS.
On the MyGig if it "gets lost" or starts acting a little weird, just go into Engineering Mode.....
Press Menu and Seek Up, Seek Down all at the same time and your in engineering mode.
NOTE: Enter at your own risk as you can damage your MyGig beyond repair
Its not really that scary, just don't press anything that you don't need to.
After entering engineering mode,
Scroll down until you find, "Nav Debug" press it
the screen will appear blank
Scroll up three pages
the last page will display recalibrate, press it
It should recalibrate instantly
exit
and all should be good now.
I am using MyGig version 2.043 and it has been awhile since I have had to do it, so that is to the best of my recollection.
You can do a quick Google search to verify and again, be careful of what you touch in engineering mode.
I have had a lot of GPS units and I LOVE the MyGig !
