Could You Have Done Without MyGig?
#21
Could I live without it: Yes
Would I want to: NO!!!
Ad my name to the list of people who really enjoy the MyGig. I am not even slightly concerned with the fact that others who have not had the MyGig complain that it does less for more $$$. I have addressed that issue in several posts in the past and don't really care to go over it again here.
There is one thing that many people overlook when they talk about MyGig vs Aftermarket, and that is that the MyGig is warrantied by DCX. If it breaks, I take it to my dealer and they will replace it (under warranty). If it is stolen, I don't have to jump through a bunch of hoops to prove to my insurance company what was taken, I just have to show them the original invoice that says MyGig Entertainment System.
Beyond all of that, the MyGig is not just a head unit, it is a computing platform. We have only begun to see the potential of this platform... which is limited only by the software that is installed on it. As the software evolves, the feature set will grow -- I've already seen this happen as my unit has gone through 4 software upgrades in the 6 months I've had it.
All in all, I'm glad I got it, and given the opportunity to do over, I'd get it again without hesitation.

The other feature you're probably referring to is Video Playback in motion -- a feature that will never be available from the factory as Video Playback viewable by the driver while the vehicle is in motion is against the law in all 50 states. There is no unit that will provide this functionality if it is properly installed -- per the manufacturer's instructions. Some aftermarket devices can be installed in a way that fools them into thinking the vehicle is not in motion -- thus enabling the video playback.

FYI, Mopar is coming out with a UConnect kit for the JK for around $200 if I remember correctly. I already have a early release version of this kit installed and it works great. I do agree with you that it should have been installed by the factory at no additional cost, but it is what it is.

Okay, I Did It!
Ordered my Unlimitted Rubi,...
WITH THE MYGIG.
Thanks to all who offered pros and cons. I think the thing that helped influence my decision was that those who have the MyGig seem to be more emphatic that they have it and like it, as opposed to those who felt they were living well enough without it.
I will keep you posted on the Status.
Thanks again to all who contributed!

I know I'm late but I have to say I do like the MyGig HOWEVER I feel it is not worth the price at all. There are many features disabled in the Jeep that you need to pay extra for aftermarket parts to get working. The Nav is no better, and maybe worse, than my 200 dollar Magellan. The Sirius allows you to get construction updates but does not use traffic flow info that is sent ( and being paid for in the traffic subscription of 3.99 per month ). The hard drive can't be updated and only allows for a few pics, and NO video. You can pretty much only add music... that's OK because it's really a radio anyway. If you do research you will find quite a few people have had problems of one thing or another. I also looked around and found you can get aftermarket units that can do everthng the MyGig does and more that cost the same or less. AND they look 100% stock and fit flawlesly in place of the MyGig. Check out the Pioneers just as a start.
The MyGig has the potential to do SO much more. As you use it you'll see little simple things that should be different.
If I could do it again I'd go aftermarket.

As for entering Navigation data without coming to a stop, that can be done in a limited manner on the MyGig now, the only thing you can't do is type out an address. If you already have the address in your contact list, or have entered it before, you can currently select it from a list while driving. I agree that this is a serious limitation, but I understand that HK is working on a software update that will resolve the issue.
Bluetooth & Handsfree calling will be available from Mopar as an add on kit in Q1 2008 for < $200.

<~~ I did it before anyone else did..
I would not have bought the JK if I could not get Navi in it from factory. It was a requirement.
And If I were to rate the MyGig it gets a 7 out of 10. main reason, I came form an Acura where you could type in a destination while driving, and now you need to pull over... quite annoying.

i was too cheap to spend over a grand but i got an REN model mygig off ebay for $700 , its the mygig without the navigation, I dont really need a nav but I did want it. just could not spend the extra $ at this time
it was easy to install and i love it, I know im going to regret not getting the nav but whatever, i guess its too late now heh, the dvdplayback is cool but the parking brake needs to be up, i love the fact that i can store all my music on it and I do think it puts out a little better sound then the 1cd sirius head unit i had. I just wish the "audio" button on mine said "nav" but i guess i can deal with it,
