Could You Have Done Without MyGig?

I don't understand why everyone tries to compare spending $1500 for MyGig to buying a DVD out of pocket? The $1500 MyGig is included with your financing, so its not out-of-pocket, while an aftermarket will be (with exception of credit cards/etc). If you are trying to make yourself feel better because you only spent $1000 on your DVD player instead of the $1500 MyGig spread out over however many months, then more power to you, I'll be getting it included with the purchase price and save the out-of-pocket expense for things you can't get at the factory.

Im a stereo guy. Ive had $10,000+ stereos in some of my past vehicles. I love the MYGIG. Even though its a spendy option, you would pay at least that in aftermarket stuff with the amp, sub, and speakers. It also sounds great. After I get the new amp and get the crackling noises to go away, I will love it even more. The only upgrade I will make is possibly new tweeters. I like my music really bright and clear and the tweeters are a little lacking.
Its really up to you. If you would rather pay less for the Jeep and put the stereo in it as you can afford it, then do it. Its all up to you. I could have gone either way.

I am a guy who really appreciates the latest in teckie stuff. This system is truly awesome! Its intuitive simple software is truly fun to use.
Here is my unsolicited take:
Like Kntr says there are a few bugs, that from what I have seen, Harmon Becker is bending over backwards to remediate. I agree that the tweeters were defiantly lacking so I replaced mine for around 50 bucks (Infinitys on ebay). It sounds so incredible now no one believes that it is a factory system. (even the guy at the local stereo shop) I would also agree Kntr, that he has a valid point that you might buy a nice head unit that would be comparable to the Mygig however throw an amp, Sub, some decent speakers, and installation - time and or money in and see where your at. It would probably be closer to 2 grand to get to the quality of this system. I will probably look aftermarket and On top of ALL that, see what kind of warranty you get with it. I’d be willin to bet it wouldn’t be 3 years/ 36,000mi
As far as MJS_Jeep_888 point about the 6 disc changers being sufficient, I guess it’s a matter of what you’re into. I respect his opinion, but since the advent of flash memory, I have perceived the CD and DVD media as being a terribly flawed design. In comparison, Cd/DVDs take up a ridiculous amount of space. They are unreasonably fragile in that they scratch easily and have to be stored safely. Now that the hard drives are in the cars…forget about it! Cds and DVD will be a thing of the past sooner than you think. The growing popularity in wireless technology will make all this even easier to manage your cars entertainment system through mobile devices and or your home computer.
If you want a jeep to bash around in – strictly for the jeep experience and sound isn’t that important to you, I might advise against spending $1,000 or more on any audio system. If you want the conveniences of most luxury cars that have nice entertainment systems with navigation, I’d say this system is a steal!
The retail price of the Mygig on my 08 Rubi’s sticker was $1,275.00 I got it for less than that. I think its one Hell of a deal!

There's not much else to add! It's all up to you. Here's what you need to decide:
Do you want to pay once, and be over with everything? Then get the Mygig.
Do you want a nicely integrated system? Then get a Mygig.
Do you want to have the price included with your purchase? Get a Mygig.
Do you want to have it included in your warranty? Get a mygig.
Now, if you're looking to upgrade your stereo down the road (Speakers, amplifier, subwoofer) get an aftermarket unit.
If you want customizability, with the ability to add video cameras, blue tooth, ipods CD changers, etc. get an aftermarket.
If you want to be able to watch video without any issue, get an aftermarket unit.
The mygig is a great unit. I've played around with it myself. I bought an aftermarket unit because I want to put in my own stereo. The aftermarket unit will allow me to easily upgrade to new amplifiers without hacking into the harness. I feel like I have more control over the sound dynamics as well. Also, being able to watch DVD's withouth issue is nice, and the ability to add various cameras is great too.
Complimenting the DVD feature in my unit (Kenwood 819DVD) is an ipod feature, where I can watch my ipod's videos as well. The kenwood also has a garmin based navigation unit, with a nuvi-like interface... I have a soft top, so I think bluetooth is useless (I'm going to be using a jawbone headset instead) but if I wanted bluetooth, it's just another add on option. Also, my kenwood has a cool "Switch" feature. Just wire up your relay to it, and you have a touch-screen switch! It has only 2 ports, but it'll be great for my windshield lights.

I found my JK online, it was one state over and I purchased it over the phone/fax having only seen a poor resolution pic of the exterior. I love a good risk. I felt like it was underpriced by several grand so I hopped on a plane 2 hours after finding it online and went to pick it up. The risk paid off. The jeep was pristine, had only about 900 miles on it and low and behold it also had MyGig. The dealer didn't say anything about an upgraded head unit. Sorry for the irrelevant details, I have had the Jeep for about 2 months now and MyGig is one of my favorite parts of the Jeep. I am so glad I ended up with it, it is not an option I would have added if I bought new. If and when I buy my next wrangler I will definitely get MyGig or the equivalent offering.

I wanted a soft top Rubi and already had a Lowrance iWay 500c -- a 5" touch screen nav unit with 10 gig of mp3 storage space -- mine was $500 in the summer of '06. I had a little thinking to do. I bought my JK outright with a trade, so I felt EVERY penny I spent up front! A cool grand is still a LOT of money to me!
Bottom line, I didn't see any point in the MyGig for my situation and didn't buy it. In fact, a nice shiny screen is a theft magnet to me, and my "decadent" 6-disc will hold over 30 gig of Mp3s and looks like a cheap stock radio -- lovin' the stealth! My nav unit can go with me from vehicle to vehicle and is really a HUGE help when I travel for business. It's not just the JK, I don't ever see me buying any vehicle with an integrated nav unit. The portable nav unit works for me. And that extra $1,000 will look so much better as.....as.....(stares at floor)....a backyard fence.
