Default Can a winch be run by a rocker switch

I have searched for some info about this without any luck. So my question is there any way to wire up your winch to a switch or switches. I have put some thought into it but just couldn't figure it out, is there any one out there with this setup?

are you looking for it to be a simple on and of switch or do you also want to have an in and out switch as well. there are a variety of winch switch options, you can even get them with both front and rear winch panels. i saw a site the other day, if i find it i'll PM you.

You just want to be able to turn it on and off? Why not the ability to have it move forward & reverse? Seems like that's the biggest benefit of tying a winch into switches inside the Jeep.

Easy to do. You will need a Single Pole/Single Throw (SPST) switch for On and Off, a Double Pole/Double Throw (DPDT) switch for In and Out, some 18AWG or 20AWG wire and a winch connector. Don't know the brand of winch or connector type. You will have to figure that out on your own.

Type "winch remote switch" into google. You will get quite a few manufacturers remotes and a handful of How-To sites.

If you have one of those variable speed winches (MileMarker MIFI) I don't know how the In and Out is controlled. That will require deeper research.

If you have the winch remote, you can take it apart, see which wires control which setting and tie them into the switches.

Agreed with "BigRedJK". Disasemble your remote paying attention on how the circuits are layed out. You can use just a normal switch for the on / off function ( Maintained Contact ). But look for switches with a "Momentary Contact" for the in / out function. This means that the switch is only on when you are actualy pushing the button. Stay away from having seperate buttons for in / out ( try to find a 3 position switch ). If you use seperate buttons, they will have to be either mechanicaly or electricaly interlocked to prevent both buttons from opperating at the same time.

To be able to help more, it would be nice to know what type of winch you are using.

I just did this with my Smittybilt winch and it works great. I have a SPST that activates the Ramsey winch relay (solenoid) for the winch. I then have a SPDT (MM)ON/OFF/ON(MM) tha allows in and out function. I wired this to the inside connections for the remote control. This way I can either use the remote or the cab controls. This also allows some safety in the fact I have to throw two switches before the winch will operate, no accendetal operation. For added security, the SPST switch is wired to ACC on so it will not work unless the key is in the ignition. Not a hard process if I can do it successfully, but needs to be thought out. PM me if you want more specifics on my set-up.
