The Black Box our new JKs have
OK, so our new JKs have a black box in them. For those of you who dont know what they are. They are recording devices that record your speed, rpm, steering input, seat belt use, braking, and lighting use for several second prior to any crash. My question is does anyone know how to disable or remove it? Or at least can someone tell me exactly where it is and what it look like? My guess is that is may be part of the jeep's main operating computer and not removeable.

I believe it's part of the ECM and cannot be removed or "turned off". There is a reference to this "feature" in the owner's manual. I think it said it records the last two seconds before an airbag deployment. And that they (DCX) will provide it to insurance companies and law enforcement, yada, yada..

That black box controls your air bags as well. Screwing around with this will shut down your air bags, may also cause them to deploy on their own.
Right now Police can't get the information from them directly anyway. Have to send to DC with warrant to get it.
I wouldn't screw around with it at all!!
I believe it's located under the front passenger seat on the JK

No the black box tells the air bags when to deploy. It computes how hard and fast to deploy depending on the crash.
I know I don't want a 300km/h air bag deploying on it's own!

Well it shouldn't even touch you. They don't fill up all space between the wheel and seat like the movies depict. Although it sure looks funny that way. It would most likeley knock your hands off the wheel & possibly break your thumbs if you hold the steering wheel the way God intended.
