Default Aftermarket radio power supply

Quick question for those with an aftermarket radio installed. On the Crutchfield website it says that you need some PAC power supply setup to work an aftermarket head unit. It runs like $120. Is this really a necessity, anyone got a setup going w/o or is it pretty much a requirement. Thanks for any help.
