I love the AK and M1A but I would like to choose the M4 with the ACOG scope. Advantage being, The AR is light, could carry lots of ammo and stay back at a range of about 300 yards. I like the M1A scout also.

Default Canadian

I had to vote "other"
as I worry about the authorities knowing what i have up here in Canada.
On one hand I envy you guys in the U.S.
but on the other i love Canada and they never seem to check us in Canada.

What? We can only vote for one???

Seriously though, Ak's are not known for their accuracy. Their highest attribute is that they go BANG every time you pull the trigger. Mud, dirt, whatever~ won't stop em. They're great for suppressive fire but not normally consistently accurate at distance. If I had a spare grand I'd sport an AR but until then I'll be sticking with my trusty Savage 110 bolt action .308. She's sittin in a custom Hogue stock and produces some beautiful shot patterns. Talk about reach out and touch someone!

Oh and I'd be backed up by a Bennelli 12Ga 3 1/2" mag pumpgun and miscellaneous handguns (of course) what?

Default .22lr

I'd have to bring along a .22lr just to do some plinkin' if not just to pick off a few of the unruly ones.

Ill take both M4's a couple thousand rounds of ammo. of course my tikka t-3 lite in 300 win mag a have a few hundred rounds for it in the safe. I guess the bow would come as well as my Strider SMF and RCC double gunner, damn knives are indestructable.

In direct answer to the question, the choice is dictated by the scenario I would think and situation (all things being equal and access to all that is listed or you can want).

Since no one weapon is 'perfect' for every or even most situations and scenarios you will want a 'battery'. Long gun, shotgun, pistol (per person ideally).

You really though need reliable weapons based on common ammo (and mags). 5.56/.223, 7.62/.308, 12Ga, 9mm, .38, .45, .22. (not entirely in that order, but that's not bad either).

Some folks would press to go with as few popular calibers as possible in selecting a battery. That's tougher though in the purest sense.

Some might point out dual use/cartridge weapons too... 357s, .410s, or over under long guns firing shotgun and some kind of pistol or rifle caliber in different barrels.

And don't discount your bows, air rifles, and edged weapons. all have use.

Me, if I could afford it, M1 Garand or M14, M4 12Ga tactical, and a 9mm pistol (I'm just not overly fussy... M9, any of a number of the Glocks, some of the Ruegers - just none with the no safety decock setup, awful, Sigs, etc). I like the range, accuracy, and punch of the heavier caliber rifle... shotty for backup, pistol if I got no choice. Reaching out at 400 - 500yds or better > close range fight.

A 'scout' rifle... bolt action, 7.62/308 caliber, bull barrel, moderate scope, tactical stock and a good multi- use adjustable sling would be nice too.

Someone said something about a grand to get into a AR... more like 600 for a decent one (and I've seen it done a tad cheaper) - may be more now with the recent run on guns and parts.

Ohhh yeah, I forgot, for surely, I would take my 65# compound bow, the wife's bow and the kid's bow. if it were really to go to shit, I think the silent kill is gonna come in handy, not to mention, ammo can be reused.

And talk about ammo. All these rifles and handguns will be of no more use than a club if you have no ammo. I have a deversity of rifles and handguns from an old Winchester .22 carnaval rifle to a couple assault rifles including a Bushmaster and a Romanian AK 47 with bayonet, and alot in between, but along with these I have been stocking ammo, and continue to. Have you seen the prices of ammo lately?
I believe in addition to the rifles, for home defense the shotgun is a very good weapon to have on hand. Both long and short barrels, and again plenty of ammo both in the small game loads and large game and slug loads.
In addition I have a very nice shooting Lyman .50 cal black powder, with cans and cans of both FFg and FFFFg.
Don't forget about the bows. A nice compound with plenty of arrows with both broadheads and fieldtips.
I doubt that the US will come undone in my lifetime to the point of anarchy where I'll need to defend my family and home from invading marauders, but I like to keep plenty of weapons and ammo on hand. I believe a good deversity of weapons is best.
