A buddy has a friend who has an old AR15 for sale, I was told a good shooter, but not much to look at.. been around forever. and He believed its .308.. looks like a veitnam era m16.. not the newer fancy ones.. I was told it would be under $700?

You are being pretty vague here. First of all there never was a real Colt AR-15 made for the .308 cartridge. Needless to say it probably isn't a Colt then. Secondly, it might be an original Armalite AR-10 in which case its worth several thousand dollars, maybe over $10,000 if its a rare one. Anyways, find out a brand name and serial number and look it up on the database on the AR-15.com website. Then look at comparable rifles on the gunsamerica.com website for an idea on its value.
