I'd stay away from odd calibers like 10mm. As the previous poster stated, the ammo can be hard to find and expensive. They are neat from a collecting standpoint but not as practical for recreational use. I own a number of .45s but tend to fire my .38 and 9mm more often as they are cheaper. Odd calibers are also harder to resell and tend to bring less money. I bought a .338Federal Kimber rifle nib for $450 at a sale because no one wanted the odd caliber.

 

I want the gun for bears and protection. I'm in the mountains 2-3 times a week mountain biking. I see bears a lot. I carry a 41 mag scandium now, but Id like a few more shots before reloading. I won't be shooting the gun a lot, so ammo is not a big deal. Ill just buy a few boxes and they will last me a long time.

IMO a 9mm and 40 are not big enough for a charging bear.

I didn't mean t give you the impression that you should buy a .38. I was trying to let you know the cons of less popular cartridges. It's your money and your gun. You get whatever you want! Don't mind me.
