Tarus judge - get the size of a pistol, with a 410 shell. I rotate mine, bird shot followed by .45. First shot in the face would stun, gives time to line up a good second. Hope I never get to be proved right or wrong.

Glock 19 is without a doubt the easiest handgun I have ever used just point and pull the trigger I have 3 33 round clips 4 15 round clips and 2 10 round clips in the night stand ready to go...you break into my house you WILL not leave my house alive.

I'm now considering the 19 due to the possibilty of carrying...I've shot the 17 and loved it, haven't yet shot a 19. I'm also considering the 23 for carrying.

For home defense, nothing beats a shotgun. If you want to go with a Glock Semi-Auto, then one of the full size models like the 17 are hard to beat. However, just in case you may want to carry it later on, I'd recommend the semi-compact models such as the 19.
You can fit any glock magazine in any glock as long as the calibers are the same.
For home defense, I would advise against a 9mm or a 40 s&w. While both of these rounds are excellent for military and LEO, they are known to overpenetrate - even with hydroshock hollow points.
A .45 ACP is the best home defense round. It will NOT overpenetrate, so you don't have to worry about shooting through a perp, through a wall, through a window, and blasting your neighbors chihuahua. Remember, you are liable for any damage that bullet causes.
You don't even have to splurge for hollow points with a .45.
For those of you who want to argue capacity...if you can't defend yourself with an entire magazine of .45's then you are screwed - either you can't shoot, or there are too many bad guys, in which case you probably need a semi auto rifle.
Im not being caliber racist here...I own a 9mm...and I love it....its just not safe because of collateral damage.

Another vote for a shotgun here.
I knew a guy who bought a car that never ran out of gas and the car company showed up and took it back. True story, it was a monkey's uncle that told me.
