I have nothing against semi auto shotguns. I will probably pick up a benelli m4 some day. I just wanted a pump shotgun for home defense and for a fairly cheap price. That's why I was looking at the 870 and 590.

Check out Stoeger's version of the M4 when you go shopping. Essentially the same gun at a much lower price.

20 gauge in the 23 round variety and 20 in the 12 if i remember correctly. but please take that with a major grain of salt as im pretty drunk at the moment. but 20 is what i run because of the fact that you get 60% of the power at ~50% of the recoil of the 12. 2 shots equal 120% of volume/power at the same speed as the 12

Yeah, my benelli M4 was expensive and I suppose if you need something right away for home protection or to train with then a Mossberg would do the job. I had a pump action Mossberg when I was younger and it did what it was supposed to do, protect my home and occasional skeet and trap. I'm all about research so I'd get the best product for what I can afford...

I installed a Knoxx stock yesterday. I can't wait to try it out.

I really like how the 870 feels....its a tough decision. I wish I could just buy both haha.
with the added information that you are a lefty, I would go with the 590. I have a friend who is lefty and loves the Mossberg 500/590 shotguns. Just to clearify, a true 590 is not quite the same as a 500, it has a metal trigger guard, metal safety, extra thick barrel and uses a differant magazine tube and tube cap. If you ever think you are going to change the barrel if you get the 590 it may be quite hard to do so. with all that being said I like both but lean towards the 870 because I'm more familliar with the safety set up. As far as reliablity goes they are both rock solid and the 590 beat out the 870 in the military trials.
