I picked up a 500 at the gun shop and wasn't too impressed with it. I would have definitely picked the 870 over the 500. The only reason I have this delima is because of the price I got on the 590. I just saw that another local gun store has a used 590 a1 with ghost ring sights for $399. I might go check it out.

I own both the 870 and a 590a1. I inherited the 870 (made in 1957) from my grandfather 12 years ago and never had a problem with it. The 590a1 I've only had 9 months and it's at the gunsmith's getting fixed, it wont cycle/pick up a round out of the tube. So right now I have to get the edge to the 870 just because of dependability.

I've had this one since 1998. It's carried daily (don't let the pristine old-school Walnut fool 'ya) and has always run like a champ.
For accessorizing, reliability, and durability, it's hard to beat a milled receivered Remy 870, imo.

I owned a Rem 870 wingmaster for years. I put that thing through hell and it came blazing out the other side. I could put shitty reloads through it and it would just laugh and kick again. I loved that thing.
The one thing I really liked about it was the ease of breakdown. Two pins and the mechanism drops out for cleaning. Just undo the mag nut and the pump comes right off to clean the rails. It got to be second nature for me.

my vote is for the 870. I own one for personal/home defense AND I use one at work. My main reason for voting 870 is take down/dissassembly. I find it rather idiotic that you must remove the trigger group with tools to disassemble and clean the Mossbergs.

So I went to pick up my 590 today and switched to an 870 at the last minute. I was eyeing an 870 with a 20in barrel when I bought the 590 last week and that exact gun went on sale. I just couldn't pass it up....plus if I get a 590, I want the a1 instead of the special purpose. I'll post up a pick of my new remington 870 when I get home tonight.
