Please help. I'm looking to purchase a pump shotgun for home defense. I was sold on the Remington 870 express 18in barrel (model#5077) but now I'm looking at a Mossberg 590sp 20in barrel (model#50645). The 590 is only $30 more than the 870, so price isn't really a factor. What do you guys think?

I don't think you will be wrong with either one you pick. I like the Remington 870 myself, I've had one for over 20 years and have put it through hell here in our swampy terrain. Hell, I tripped once and I fell with the shotgun in my hand and buried it in muck, I pulled it out and fired my shot with no problems.

I was in the same boat as you, even though I love the 870 you can't really go wrong with the 590, both are awesome....

I have a Mossberg 590 and used a Mossberg 590 while I was in iraq. For me the 590 has proven it self

I had both. I still have the 870 and I don't have the Mossberg.

stay with the tried and true 870 been around for a long time and i own 3 and not a single one has given me trouble not once

thanks for the replies everybody. I'm probably going back to pick one of them up later today. So far I like the feel of the 870 but I like the higher capacity of the 590...please keep the comments coming.

I have both and IMO the fit, finish and operation of the Remington just seems to be a bit nicer. Both are tried and true weapon systems but my vote goes to the Remington.
