There is also a nice aftermarket stock for the Hi-Point that makes it look very similar to the Beretta carbine

Get a Ruger Mini-14

I have one & love it!

Ammo is fairly cheap & rifle is good quality, reliable & not expensive!

Lorrel is right, that an AK is a blast to shoot, and would be in budget. Just a warning though... you can go through a lot of ammo really fast!!
AR's are lots of fun too, but most are priced a lot higher than AK's.
More of an assault rifle preferably

college budget only allows for one but ill look into the .223 a little more for sure

Are there any reliable ones under 1k? cause im having a hard time looking. And i havent looked into ammo yet, guess I oughta do that too

You can get a bolt action in .204, .223 or .243 all are common calibers in your price range.
I am looking into those too

Now assuming that the OP is wanting a bolt action, he would save a bit on the rifle itself, but again the price of the ammo would become the big dollar item costing about $1 per round for any of the cal's you mentioned.
Since the OP is new to the game, and wants to shoot and have fun, the AK or HighPoint is the way to go.
I am having trouble finding the highpoint, can you link one? And by the way bolt action is actually a preference Not required but I like it. As for ammo a dollar a round is a bit much, so if I can avoid it I will, but again, not a necessity

Yea, the Highpoint is a pretty good seller right now, and likely so, as it is built in America, using 100% American parts and material. In addition it has a lifetime guarantee, and from what I've heard on the HighPoint forum anyone who sends a rifle in for rapair, it comes back repaired, cleaned and a free magazine to boot. This is great because the only downfall to this weapon is the magazine. It only holds 10 rounds.
Here's a link to just one review. A must read.

If you do try to purchace one, be sure to get the 995TS model. It is awsome.
Sorry for going on about this carbine, but I'm pretty excited about it. I purchased one a while back, and liked it so much, when I had a chance to get another, I jumped right on it. The second one I got from Cabela's, I had my name on the list when they got another shipment. They called and told me they had 14 that had just come in, by the time I got there, which was about 2 hours later, they had 3 left.

I believe the Highpoint is chambered in 9mm which not known for it's long range accuracy like the other centerfire rifle rounds that have been mentioned in this thread. I you want a plinker for the range get a .22LR auto loader. If you want to accurately engage targets at 100 yards or more a centerfire rifle round (.223 and equivalent) is what you are after.
