Bean bag first (most home shootings are family/friends shot by mistake) followed by #7 1/2 bird shot (won't over penetrate). Or load up buck and slugs and wipe out kids/neighbors through walls/house. ROFL.

This is fairly consistent with advice I got from a friend who is in law enforcement.

I would like to talk about best shotgun shell for home protection. In a home with children and also home with no children.
Not necessarily best brand, but best kind shell.
Right now I got several kind shells for both my 870 and my semi auto and they shoot better with certain lengths etc.

Also AR15s (in .223/5.56) are good for not penetrating far. I know it sounds like bs but the projectile disintegrates rather quickly in the self defense variety once it hits something.
9mm is supposedly some of the most dangerous to zip through walls and keep going.
But they make ammo for all different purposes. The frangible ammunition is highly recommended for home defense because it disintegrates on impact.
