One of the dogs in question. Never seen one. Sure is a purdy thing.

 

They are a beautiful looking dog, (part of the Akita/spitz family) my co-workers dog "Cruiser" is super friendly with my younger kids & other people.....but wow...when it see's a bear, it will lay a hurt on that bear if it wants to stick around....to the point that it will sacrifice it's life for the owners.

Taurus Tracker in .44mag or 454 casull great guns and great price I have mine for about two yrs now and no issues but the ports make them loud as Fuck, the Marlin .45/70 is another good one

That's a fine gun. I know I like mine. I really hate to admit it, but my Marlin has a much better action than my Winchester....even though the Winchester is my favorite.

 

It's not fun dude especially a really pissed off Sow Grizzly with cubs charging at full bore....you lose all bowel control and adrenline kicks in as you pull out the bear spray safety tab and aim and wait till it's about 15 ft away! Watch it roar, scream, thrash and run-off as you pellet it with pepper spray.

Good luck with a gun....more likely you will miss or wound the bear and piss it off more!

 

I carry bear spray. But...

"Red pepper spray stopped bears’ undesirable behavior 92% of the time when used on brown bears, 90%for black bears" - State of Wyoming website.

So, if I were to encounter an angry bear, there is an 8-10% chance that the spray would be ineffective. That's not good enough.

If you frequent bear country without a gun, and you encounter a bear determined to attack you, there is a one in 10 chance that you will be just a spicy bear snack.

I think what I will do is let the other members of my parts carry the bear spray, while I pack some real heat. Surely my wife can handle a squirt gun filled with hot sauce.

Being a former guide here in Alaska, I will also agree (somewhat) with Triplejeep, only because, pepperspray doesn't "always" do the trick and dogs can "help" but if a bear is intent to get to you a dog won't stop it, especially if the bear gets a paw on it. Get yourself either a handgun or shotgun and have the wife carry one or two cans of pepper spray,and you carry one too. There was a local attack here just the other day. He was VERY lucky. I am actually looking for the same gun he used..a 454 Casul. But I really only want it because I can shoot 45s through it for fun, and to have in the tent when camping with the family. Many of the local foresty and park rangers carry short shotguns with buckshot and slugs. I think if I was you that would be the way I'd go. Your wife can even shoot a shotgun.

Here is what happened here the other day.....it happened 400 yards from where a jogger was mauled last hear. My mominlaw just bought a house not far from there as well.

Have I got a story for you guys!

King season is over, and since i had a day off before silvers start, i thought i would go for a walk! this occurred at 11:16 am this morning (Sunday), just 2/10 of a mile from my house, ON OUR ROAD while walking my dogs (trying to get in shape for hunting season, ironically!) for the record, this is in a residential area-not back in the woods, no bowhunting, no stealth occurring...

I heard a twig snap, and looked back...full on charge-a huge brownie, ears back, head low and motorin' full speed! Came with zero warning; no woof, no popping of the teeth, no standing up, nothing like what you think or see on TV! It charged from less than 20 yards and was on me in about one-second! Totally surreal-I just started shooting in the general direction, and praise God that my second shot (or was it my third?) Rolled him at 5 feet and he skidded to a stop 10 feet BEYOND where I was shooting from-I actually sidestepped him and fell over backwards on the last shot, and his momentum carried him to a stop past where I fired my first shot!

It was a prehistoric old boar-no teeth, no fat-weighed between 900-1000 lbs and took five men to DRAG it onto a tilt-bed trailer! Big bear-its paw measured out at about a 9 1/2 footer!

never-ever-thought "it" would happen to me! its always some other smuck, right? well, no bull- i am still high on adrenaline, with my gut in a knot. feels like i did 10000 crunches without stopping! almost puked for an hour after, had the burps and couldn't even stand up as the troopers conducted their investigation! totally wiped me out-cant even put that feeling into words, by far the most emotion i have ever felt at once!

No doubt that God was with me, as I brought my Ruger .454 Casull (and some "hot" 350 grain solids) just for the heck of it, and managed to draw and snap shoot (pointed, never even aimed!) from the hip! Total luck shot!

All I can say is Praise God for my safety and for choosing to leave the wife and kids at home on this walk! Got a charter tomorrow, so gonna TRY to get some sleep now!

That Taurus Tracker would be a good choice in the 454 Casull round, not only for the knock down power, but you can also shoot 45 Long Colt rounds through it as well!!!

With the correct load, the 45 Long Colt round also has some good bear stopping power!!!

 

I am considering the Taurus Judge, which will shoot the 45LC, as well as .410 shotgun shells, which might be fun, when not packing for bear.
