AK4DAVE-

Depending on the model, the S&W you saw MIGHT be worth $900, but only if it was 1 of 2 models. If it was a 1006 or 1066, IMO that's too much. I just paid $400 for my 1066 that was shot little. If it was a 1076 that was an FBI issue, I can see that, or if it was a 1046 as there were only 150 made.

The 10mm is my personal favorite, and the only one I shoot anymore. I carry both the Glock 29 and the S&W 1066, but have gone mostly to the S&W because I shoot it better faster. There has been a resurgence in 10mm popularity lately, as evidenced by the new version of the Colt Delta Elite being released between now and spring, as well as Vltor releasing the new Fortis, which is a beefed up version of the original Bren Ten.

There are many rumors and info that fly around the internet regarding the 10mm, especially when it comes to the FBI program, penetration, recoil, etc. If you want some solid info with no bs from people that were part of the process check out 10mmtalk.com. The bear topic has come up at least once. We are a very friendly, mature bunch that can answer any question you have regarding the cartridge, or you can always search for the info.

Since it seems like you are in an information gathering mode, be sure to check ballistics tables. While you do that, keep in mind that most ammo manufacturers have reduced the power of their 10mm loads to be very close to a .40 S&W round due to the percieved recoil issues. If you want ammo that performs the way Jeff Cooper originally wanted the 10mm to do, check out DoubleTapammo. Mike McNett there is a wizard with his loads and I don't think I've ever heard of anyone having ANY negative issues with his ammo (me included).

For other 10mm ammo sources, popular choices are:

DoupleTap for high performance
BuffaloBore has two offerings
GeorgiaArms has their "Canned Heat", which is the cheapest way to go for target ammo. They also have some "+P" offerings, but their velocity doesn't stack up to DT or BB.
BVAC from Montana has good target ammo
Winchester Silvertips. They are listed at 1190fps, however more than one shooter on 10mmtalk has consistantly gotten 1400fps from this round.

The 10mm, when loaded for performance, has similar or better ballistics to the 357 magnum, is available in an semi auto platform, and in most cases has more ammo to shoot. The EAA Witness holds 15 rounds, Glock 20 holds 15, and the S&W 10xx series hold 9.

If you want a typical size auto to pack in the woods, check it out. If you want the biggest thing to shoot at a bear regardless if packability, there are better choices out there. Sorry for the long winded post, I hope the info helps!
