1911A1 OR Mini-14??
I'm heading to the shop this week to purchase one and only one....
I'm considering a $600 1911A1 - whatever that will get me for the money or a fairly stock Ruger Mini-14.
I've always wanted a .45 for combination target and carry.... Our new president may decide to add Mini-14's to his list for banning. (I expect the 1911 will be around for awhile).
What do you think? These are my self-imposed options.
Thanks.
Jeff

There's no way around this... you need both.
I have a Mini-14 in stainless steel and like it a lot, but it's basically an expensive plinking rifle. It isn't the most accurate of arms, even after changing to a synthetic stock. Still, for reliable operation in a lightweight package that you know you can count on, it's a great rifle. The only beef I have is that high-quality aftermarket magazines are hard to come by, and Ruger will not sell anything more than their 5-round mags to the general public.
My preference for a handgun is the Beretta 96/92, but if you like the classic lines and want lots of flexibility to customize it would be tough to beat a 1911. Not sure how you're going to choose between that and a rifle, though. I strongly urge you consider getting both!
Good luck making a decision.

I don't forsee the mini-14 going on the banned list...its more of a ranch rifle or varmint rifle....but who knows...Whatever you are going to do, do it quick. I would probably get the rifle though, just in case. Like you said...you will always be able to pick up a 1911. I sold my mini-14 and got a couple AR-15's I got a couple of 1911's too and some glocks...you can never have enough guns!!!! STI makes a sweet 2011 platform that feels and shoots like a 1911, but higher capacity....My STI Edge holds 21 rounds of .40. Good luck in you search for a new gun.

If you don't have a pistol get the 1911, if you don't have a rifle get the Mini-14. If you don't have either get the 1911, because the best firearm is the one you can and will carry often. If you have a bunch of other guns already, then flip a coin or buy another Glock.
