Moab - EJS - RENTAL - INSURANCE
Hello!
My name is Tor and I'm living in Norway. I have a YJ and I'm the editor on Jeep Club Norway's web page. See ww@jeepclubnorway.no
This easter 4 of us have decided to go to EJS. We started in September with booking 2 ea 2 dr Rubicons and motel in Moab. Then we bought plane tickets. Everything was set and we just waited for the EJS paper to arrive. It has, and we have made priority list for wanted trials.
Then I mailed the rental company and asked for the licence number. They came back with the licence numbers. At the same time they stated that they found out that the CDW are not valid for any Jeeps for the EJS period.
As a foreigner from a country with a (obvious) different insurance system I'm afraid that the EJS dream goes down the drain.
I need your help to understand what to do. I see that other rental companies in MOAB states that one should bring a "Proof of Insurance".
How and where can I get such proof.
I am in contact with the rental company, but would like to have some information from "elsewhere" as well.
I contact you since I found this Moab thread and the fact we're going to rent JK's.
I really hope you can help me out on this one. I sincerly appreciate any help I can get.
I really hope I'll see you in Moab.
Thanks in advance

Hey Tor_nor, it would be awesome if you could join us in Moab. Regarding insurance, I would think that the rental company in question would have a policy that they can offer you. Please keep us know how things work out for you.

hmmm, what i can tell you is that "proof of insurance" is required to drive in most states here in the U.S. it shouldn't make a difference on your rental as the insurance would not cover that vehicle. all retal agency offer insurance for their vehicles and if you have an american express credit card, they will offer insurance as well.

I have been in the US approx 12-14 times since '85. On every trip, business or pleasure I have rented cars and paied the rent and insurance at the desk using a credit card.
Now I want to rent a 4X4 for offroad use in Moab. For me it would sound reasonable the rental company offered insurance. In this case they states that they never offer CDW for the Rubicons, and they don't offert CDW for the other jeeps either, UNDER THE EJS.
I assume they have a history of mucj damage under the EJS.
So what is your "proof of insurance". Does it just tell that you actually have some insurances, or do you use your own insurance to insure the rental Jeep?
If the latter is true, I assume that it is an US insurance "thing".
The rental company ask me to send my Norwegian "proof of insurance" but my insurance company wouldn't pay 1 cent if I ruin a Rubicon in Moab.
Will paying the rent using a AMEX card give me full insurance off-road if any thing happends?

I hate to say it but I really only think you'll get these questions answered if you call the rental place. Either they'll rent you one or they wont, but you should really address these questions/concerns with the rental agency directly.

OK!
I have been in contact with the rental company. The Jeeps are insured on-road, but not off road.
So now I have asked them to get a quote for an insurance policy for the off-road part of the driving.
How is this handled for an US citizen owning a Jeep? Does your standard insurance cover offroad driving? Or do you get an extra insurance for off-road driving?
Anyway! We're coming over from Norway and are looking very much foreward to the event. The biggest Jeep event in Norway every year gathers approx 60 Jeeps, so Moab will be big for us

Welcome
I think it's great that you are coming from Norway to visit!
Bring some of that special beer with ya!
As for the off-road insurance, I think you're best bet is to follow the "don't ask, Don't tell"principle with the companies. Most places dont cover off road damage, Since that is recreational and most likely intentional...
Bottom line, I would say to use extra caution on the trails, And don't tell the them you are going off-road. But that's just me.
It would be great if someone can rent a Jeep for a weekend, Buy all the insurance, And beat the hell out of it! and return it, No questions asked! But my guess is that insurance will cost THOUSANDS of dollars!

Hi Tor nor and others,
We came to Moab from England in 2007 and rented Rubicons from Farrabees.
They asked us for proof of insurance. We said "we don't have any, doesn't the rental fee include insurance"
They said no, their rental offers no insurance on the vehicle whatsoever, road or trail. After a long silence where we looked very disappointed at having gone so far to be turned away they got the boss out who decided that they would take a risk if we were prepared to!
We did, but needless to say we were VERY careful how we drove on the road as we did not want to face a huge 3rd party lawsuit/spell in jail!
Strangely it didn't put us off driving many of your fantastic trails including Moab rim, Pritchett canyon, Hell's revenge and more, but always in the back of our minds was the thought of having to pay for a total loss
We are hoping to come back this year, and have been looking for information like Tor has.
Over here, we can purchase short-term comprehensive insurance from an insurance broker that lasts from one day upwards. Is there anything like that available in the US?
Hope someone can shed some light on this,
Giles
