I've never been ...but thinking of doing a run in the Pine Barrens next month. Does anyone have information/experiences wheeling in the Pine Barrens? Maps? trail entry points? best areas to ride?

Any info/links would be appreaciated!

 

i spent some time in the barrens. Its a interesting place to say the least. You can go for miles and miles and it all looks the same. here are some 'barrens" tips for ya. I have been a couple times but i am sure there are way more knowledgable people on here about them.

• Dont go alone - or at least have a winch - the smallest little ditch/tire tracks filled with water can be 4+ feet deep. I seen some swallow full size rigs. A 100 yard long pond can be 6" deep...then baawooosh!! over you roof.

• GPS is your best friend - use it..love it. 10 miles in a pine forrest with only a couple feet in elevation changes means it all looks the same with no view. there are road signs in the middle of the main "roads" to help though. Or getting lost and just popping out on a random road is fun also.

• Wear boots....waterproof boots....and bring a change of clothes. I sunk my xterra in water mid door and my friend had to go in chest deep to get me strapped up ( i know...i should have been already) and it was snowing and 30° out. Be mud ready. It is possible to ride around and not get into alot of water but....yeah right.

• I always start out at batsto village area on rt 542 in wharton state forest. If you go past the park there is a gate on a dirt road. Just drive in and your there. i think its quaker bridge road. That the main road in this area and should be on the maps and gps.

• once insdie the forrest....start exploring! there are hundreds of side roads/trails. BE ready to get your "pine stripes" on your rig. MAny small trees/branches will scratch. Just keep your eyes out for sign for posted land. Some areas are owned by hunting camps and are usually well posted around the borders.

Yeah, I'm a member there of low standing. Don't post much. They got some serious 4x4 people there but like to do off-roading in legal areas. Don't go on grass or try to trail-blaze. If anyone joins there, please read before posting. They are basically a nice group but don't tolerate people who come on their site just looking for trails to tear it up. They set up meeting spots via PMs so they don't get hassled and unwelcome guests following along causing problems

I've hit Wharton from a little used road from White Horse pike near Hammonton which took you back to a nice hill to climb that over looked the AC train tracks.
Over the years the hill has been worn down though. It used to be a hard climb but a lot of quads came by and father time that just wore it down. My problem is that I used to go there w/ a friend who had a knack for remembering trails. I always ended up taking the wrong turn when I went by myself. The last time I forgot which puddle I bypassed and got swamped. I'd love to go back w/ my GPS to record the trail though.

The Pine Barren description given is dead on. Long sandy roads w/ holes. Basto is a famous place to start so for a first visit I would recommend there too.

A few years ago I drove from the East most side of Wharton to Long Beach Isle. Basically across NJ looking at nothing sand roads and pine trees.
