2018 Jeep Wrangler Caught Testing 4-Cylinder Engine
A Jeep Wrangler, believed to be the 2018 model and possibly outfitted with a 4-cylinder engine, was recently spied heat-testing in warm weather conditions.
The spy photos, more of which can be found through Motor Authority, show a prototype with its hood open. Seeing as the photos are of a test mule, there’s a lot of extra plumbing in the engine bay that obscures how things will eventually look for a production model.
Code-named “Hurricane,” the 4-cylinder Jeep engine has mostly been a rumor, making very few testing appearances on public roads. And it seems to be far away from going into production.
According to experts, this specific engine could take shape in different configurations, including a 300-horsepower turbocharged version, as well as a possible diesel or hybrid option paired to an 8-speed transmission for maximum fuel-economy.
Whether this package could actually debut on the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is still up in the air. But grounded in fact is that more manufacturers are looking to smaller engines to comply with emission and fuel-efficiency demands.
