Wagoneer Finally Exhumed From Cape Cod Sand

Being Buried Underneath a Sand Dune for 40 Years Was Apparently Too Much for This Jeep

So, remember all our talk about how Jeeps can conquer anything?

Well, apparently, that doesn’t include being covered up for four decades in a sand dune. Sadly, that’s clearly depicted in the photo above.

Yep, despite all our high hopes that the Jeep would emerge from its Cape Cod tomb unscathed, the elements were just too much for this Wagoneer to bear.

In all honestly, it’s not like anyone thought the Jeep would be in workable condition upon being exhumed. If you leave anything buried in sand for that long, it’s hardly likely anything will be salvageable. Prior to the excavation, the son of the Jeep’s original owner told The Boston Globe he didn’t expect the vehicle to look anything like the original Wagoneer. And it appears his predictions were pretty much dead on.

In fact, the unearthed remnants don’t look much like any vehicle. Well, maybe aside from the twisted grille and axle, which is partly shielded by the completely mangled hood. As reported here earlier, the family tried several times to have the Jeep dug up. But concerns that the excavation could cause damage to the area prevented the removal.

The recent excavation of the Jeep was prompted by the need for the city to clear the area to build an area parking lot for the beach. Looks like those plans came a few decades too late.
