Buried Wagoneer to Be Exhumed After 40 Years
Family Leery of the Condition of a Jeep Wagoneer Buried Since 1977 in a Sand Dune
There probably isn’t a Jeep reveal on the planet that’s generated more buzz than this one.
Well, aside from Jeep CEO Mike Manley candidly talking about the debut of the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk at the launch for the Grand Cherokee. Then again, we’ve known about that for quite some time.
Still, this Jeep Wagoneer buried some 40 years ago and now being excavated is quite the story. The Jeep is located in Truro, Massachusetts, near the tip of Cape Cod. It became entombed back in 1977 after being covered by a shifting sand dune on the beach.
For nearly four decades, it’s remained buried in a garage under heaps of sand, according to a Jalopnik report. The family who owns the Wagoneer has been trying to remove the vehicle for years. But town officials wouldn’t allow them to exhume the Jeep. Apparently there were environmental concerns that the removal process could cause the sand dune to shift in the beach area.

However, with plans now to turn the area into beach parking spaces, the family is being asked to dig up the vehicle. Basil Musnuff, whose mother owns the Jeep, says he doubts if the Wagoneer is in any condition worth getting excited about.
“It’s probably going to fall apart like something out of Indiana Jones,” Musnuff told the Cape Cod Times. “I’m not sure it’s even a Jeep.”
Of course, we know, there have been countless stories of Jeeps surviving far worse conditions. Then again, this is the first time we’ve heard of a Jeep being buried for 40 years in a sand dune. So it wouldn’t surprise us if there’s some pretty serious damage.
Either way, we’ll be anxiously anticipating the excavation.
