Lightly-modded 2018 JLU Rubicon Takes On Carnage Canyon

By -

Carnage Canyon is accurately named, and is typically buggy territory. That’s not a problem for this nearly-stock JLU.

When you hear “Carnage Canyon,” you likely don’t think of a nice soft peaceful trail. You probably envision big rocks and boulders, steep inclines and obstacles that take some serious machines to get over. To throw a 2018 JLU Rubicon at it is quite daft, but that’s not how Kevin and Brittany Williams think. Kevin and his wife Brittany are determined to take on the trail with their nearly stock Jeep.

Brittany, narrator and spotter for Kevin, points out in the above video from their YouTube page Lite Brite, “If you can read that sign, it actually says 39s (inches) minimum. We are not on 39s.” Could a stock JLU get up this trail? Absolutely not. But this Jeep is not heavily modified either. In fact, the mods consist of only two things: a 2.5-inch lift, and 35-inch tires. That’s it, nothing else. No tricks.

Against the Grain

Going against the recommended tire size and regarding the “body damage is likely” sign, the pair set off slowly but steadily, with careful instructions throughout. Amazingly, the Rubicon seems to cope well, and instead of stopping, they decide to see just how far they can take it. Outside the car, Williams says, “Out of curiosity now, I just want to see how far we can make it!”

Fast-diminishing sunlight eventually paused any remaining curiosity they had left, and they to get back down the trail. There was an opportunity to go further, but that would have required a winch. Williams is happy with the progress, as she elatedly proclaims, “With that being said, I’m actually extremely impressed the jeep made it even this far on 35s with just a 2.5-inch lift.”

Mission Complete

With a turnaround complete and now a downward run of Carnage Canyon, Williams is still impressed and growing more and more fond of the Jeep, while also wondering how they got up some of the rocks and boulders just a short while ago.

Can you build on a JLU Rubicon even further than this? Of course you can. But it’s nice to know a mild lift and 35s are all you really need.
